Long story short but thinking of going from 38mm deep section wheels to Vel 50RL on the roadie.
Will there be a noticeable difference in performance (other than noticing the cross winds)?
These are currently on a very good Black Friday offer...cheers

Depends really - are you time trialling, racing crits, hillclimbing?

For most situations I'd probably want the (presumably) lighter weight of the 38mms. I live somewhere v. hilly though.

Can’t come on the rim depth debate, but had the 50mm VELs for a year and been very happy with them.

there's 300grams between the 38 and the 50; I'm not sure I'd be able to notice it 😀 - I'm just about to put 88 rear / 50 front on my road bike; the extra 500g over the current wheels won't make a jot vs the stone and a half I want to lose !

Nice, mine turned up today. Only had one out of the box so far but impressed for £400

You won't notice any difference going 38mm to 50mm. You've got something like 95% of the aero gain by the time you're at 30mm.

Had my 50mm ones for 6 months and am pretty impressed. Only experienced a bit of wobble a couple of times in winds over 20mph.

Hmmm wish I hadn't seen the 50mm for £400...

Further discount if 10% if on the mailing list. Makes them £360.
Fitting my £400 set last night and very happy (not ridden them yet though) albeit slightly peeved I could have saved more

Glad people seem to like them, nothing bad said online about them other than a little heavy but given their cost even at the 'rep' they seem good.

Seems like a good deal!
I just checked for some reason I don't even get Sigma's newsletters, or would use the code for set!

A word of warning, the freehub is very noisy. I'd say they are louder then my I9 Torch and CK hubs. So you may not be popular on group rides!

I'm still mulling over these 50mm versions at ~£360 with code, but today I discovered there are a load of VEL wheelsets all produced by Sigma, with some on BF offers... Including the 85mm disc version for ~£550.

Noisy freehub sounds fantastic for me, it's been a while since I got out, but suicidal pheasants are a real menace in the South Downs lanes.

Yeah, there are two ranges - the more expensive range are built onto DT Swiss hubs whereas the cheaper range has VEL's own-branded hubs.

I have the 50mm vel wheels, very good quality and yes, noisy freewheel which bangs ocassionally. They look to be identical to Hunt wheels so guessing just rebadged by Sigma.

I paid £650 so £400 a billy bargain

Anyone taken their new 50mm wheels for a spin yet? Get any PBs? Noticeable increased speed for same power?

Finally pulled the trigger last night.

Interested too. Mine are at Heathrow with DHL on the way to Zambia.
Can’t believe it was only £30 shipping.
With codes at I paid £345 inc delivery, selling my old standard oem wheels off my 2017 roubaix for £100, so carbon wheels for £245 can’t wait.

Best Carbon wheels in winter, perish the thought. Mine are staying in the box until April

Had my new Canyon Endurace delivered and then a pair of these turned up the next day too!

They look great on the bike. Sadly not had time to ride it/them yet due to illness 🙁

Have done two rides on them, one a hilly(ish) ride in the Chilterns, another was laps of Richmond Park. On the hills I didn't notice much difference going up, they are a similar weight to the wheels that came off the bike, going down I think (albeit could have imagined) they felt a bit stiffer and maybe a bit faster. They were unfamiliar roads though so nothing to compare them too.

Richmond Park I was near my PBs (from when I was more match fit). I did notice a bit of front wheel mavement when I hit the cross wind, nothing too bad and something I am sure I would get used to but definitely more than the stock 25mm deep alu wheels that were on there stock

If nothing else they look better than the stock wheels

Been riding mine for a few rides now.
First off super easy to set up tubeless with a track pump.

They feel great on the roads here in Zambia. Not the best roads.
Super smooth as other reviews have said very loud, one of my riding mates says he want ear plugs, but on the plus’s side when going through villages with people all over the road I don’t need the bell any more.

Grabbed some PB’s and a KOM and when I’m on the front my heart rate is lower at our normal speed. Would have loved a power meter to see real proof but I’m happy.

Enjoy all you who have them.

Still need to look for some nice rotors in a sale for my set, missed the RT800 deal at Merlin.

Anyway, main reason for thread bump is that these are in the Sigma winter sale section, SALE15 drops these to ~£339 (~£20 cheaper than we paid from Black Friday).

I got a set of XT rotors from amazon warehouse for 1/2 price. Been super happy with my Vel 28 alu wheels. £171 is a bargain for their weight. Got myself a power meter too - its ace.
