Hi,

I've just bought an older orange patriot frame which has a Vanilla R on it and I need to get a stiffer spring. It currently has a 450x2.39 Fox spring and I ideally need a 650 or 700 spring.

Can anyone tell me if this 650x2.25 Cane Creek one would fit?

Thanks in advance! It's my first venture into full suspension and it's more confusing than I anticipated!

I guess it depends on whether the shock needs the full 2.39" spring compression from the spring fitted or not.

The orange website has a hard to find archive section where you should be able to find the stroke of the shock fitted by design:

I always used to use Manitou springs on my Fox shocks as they were the cheapest at the time and fit fine.

Best bet is to give TF tuned a call - I've always found them incredibly helpful.

650/700 does seem very stiff...

That age frame, (if the shock is of the same age) is likely to use the smaller diameter fox spring so a cane creek won't fit, however without more details it's hard to tell.

Thanks for the replies,

The vanilla shock on at the moment is 190mm i2i and I've measured it as 55mm stroke. I'm not sure how old the shock is, I've struggled to find info or anything on it that could help identify the age which is making things more confusing.

I also though 650/700 seemed a bit stiff, especially when I looked and saw how few 700 springs were available.

I've used a few calculators and they vary from 650 - 750. I'm a fairly big guy though, 210lb and the frames got 6 inches travel.

If you measure the threaded barrel diameter of the shock I'm sure TFT (or Loco) will be able to estimate vintage and tell you what spring you need.

At least with 55 mm stroke it sounds like 2.25" spring will be fine.

I am of similarly robust build and run a 450 lb spring in my 8" travel DH bike. I think I'd be trying a 600 lb spring in a 6" trail bike for starters...
