buy a car, us van drivers seem to be penalised by higher rates than car drivers.

Try direct line or tesco.

I went with Sainsbury's insurance last time, they were almost £100 cheaper than anyone else for my van.

Tried A Plan and found them very competitive. Moved from Flux and saved over £250 on a VW Transporter t5

Churchill offered a reasonable renewal quote for mine, but wanted silly money if I had a different set of alloy wheels fitted, ended up with LV who were a fair bit cheaper again, but that may be due to a clean licence/NCD/ being an old fart.Direct Line and NFU both virtually doubled the other's quotes.

I've tended to use Gladiator of late, who I've had good deals and the capacity to add on tools insurance and other useful odds and sods

Tried Aviva? I knocked £150 off Adrian Flux's renewal quote on my T5. And they have "local" accented call centre staff (Glaswegian for me!). Ross

Is it just a "van", or is it a van that got a few extras for camping etc?

If the van got extras etc try http://www.brentacre.co.uk/

I'm with AutoNet insurance for my T5... I think I just went with the cheapest quote on a moneysupermarket comparison.

What Ayrshire Rossco said.

Adrian Flux pumped up the price on me with my T5 and told me this was the most competitive deal around. They couldn't match Aviva that were £300 cheaper. Chumps.

Renewed with Commercial vehicle direct.
New 3 points on my license saw renewal go up by 300.
Went on line go compare or something and got close to no points.
Rang cvd back told them and they beat it.

if using one of the specialist brokers, make sure you fully research the underwriter that they are offering you.
a common underwriter offered (on the cheap deals) is "m*kerstu*dy" try google on this outfit and you seem to find a common thread of problems when you need to claim.
Only if you trust the broker to fight your corner would i risk the above..

Also try and avoid having a "commercial policy" as you may find that you cant transfer NCD out of a "commercial policy" onto a private car policy - but they wont tell you this when you sign up and will happily take your cash at the time.

If converted to a campervan join the camping & caravanning club as they use equity red star ie an established business having wider scope than offered by the "modified car specialist brokers".

do lots of research..

Try Admiral. Just insured the car and a VW T4 camper conversion on a multi car policy and saved about £130. They have only just started doing vans so you may have to ring to give van details. They were really helpful!
