What's the rule? I saw some info online that says 50% reduction after 1 yr old then 10% a year after that?
Looking at a base model 2021 Diverge, 2x8 claris, all frame, good nick. I can get a brand new 2023 model the same spec for £780 today.
Any thoughts?
I tend to follow the rule the OP mentions when setting my expectations and it’s worked out OK. Got roughly half that for a bling road bike recently…
Market is poor atm, especially if the bike your selling is being discounted by the shops.
As a guide I sold my two year old gravel bike that cost £1600 for just over £600 recently. Luckily I bought an XC MTB that would have cost a fair bit more originally, in similar condition for a similar amount.
Don't think I'd pay any more that £300 for the Diverge personally, especially when you could buy a significantly better spec'd bike for not much more.
You can filter for completed items on eBay which gives you an idea of what people actually got for stuff, and also see unsold items with fantasy price tags.
FYI, I sold a 2021 Boardman ADV with 2x GRX for £425 this week. For a bike with arguably a nicer frame but lower spec gear set I'd probably aim for £300 as a buyer.
There is no rule. It will depend on what else is available both new and secondhand as well as what size and how desirable the bike is.

I used to feel it was a fair guide for an average bike in reasonable condition. Adjust +/- for desirability, damage or whatever other arbitrary correction needed.
All bets are off the last few years though.
I tend to just check ebay sold items for a general idea.
From my recent experience buying second hand, I bought a 2021 Orbea Occam h30 with an upgraded xt crankset, derailleur, 4 pot brakes and decent tyres for £830
I believe it would have been about £2400+ a few years ago new.

Depreciation formulas are really for idiots who've taken up a terrible PCP deal on a car they now hate and are counting the days till they can chop it in 😉

This +1, I paid £1200 for a practically unused Vitus Escarpe and in the current market felt like I could have haggled but he was a student looking to buy kit to get into the industry I worked in so I took a bit of pity on him and paid the asking price (which is still objectively a bargain).
2020 you could have named your price.
2023, if you can find a buyer you can sell it at what they're prepared to pay.

If the s/h Diverge needed a new drive train, tyres and a decent fettle and you're not very mechanically minded it'd be far cheaper just to buy the new one at £780.
I just look on eBay and FB marketplace and then under cut them by a bit. How much? Depends on the total cost. I just sold a Frog 40 for £150 because most people had them for £150-200+. It sold in 2 days. <br />same for my old road bike. They were all up for about £500 so I banged it on FB for £425 and gone within a week. The time of price-gouging is over and you either sit on it hoping the price goes up again (I don’t think that’s happening for a long time) or just sell it for a bit less.
There’s loads of bikes (and people whinging about them) that have been sitting on FB, PinkBike or eBay with rather optimistic prices for ages.
I just want to clear some space, make a bit of cash and have the bikes be ridden rather than sit in the garage unloved and unused and not getting to live the life they dream of. If it manages to get someone else out riding them then even better. Bikes are made to be ridden, not hoarded. I’d rather they got ridden because bikes make the world a better place

People who entered the sport during COVID and paid more than new for a used bike will expect to get more than their bike is now worth that the supply chain is saturated and manufacturers are clearing out their liabilities.
I wouldn't even bother looking at a used bike at them moment as there will continue to be crazy new bike discounts as the financial squeeze gets tighter and tighter and stock needs offloading.

I cant remember the name, they change by the month dont they? It was the gravel version, steel frame, cost £1 ish. Never got on with it at all, whereas the very similar London Road was a great bike for me, only sold as I bought a carbon framed road bike.

No, why would I , I used it maybe 7 times, I’ve got a carbon road bike too, I wouldnt know that name unless I looked at the label. Anyway, just looked it up, it was the Full Monty, if I mistook the steel for ally, which is quite possible, as like the thread about tyres, I just cannot tell the difference between components.

I thought e-cargo bikes were supposed to hold their value well; certainly Tern seem to be to cargo bikes what Brompton are to folding bikes, the sort of "gold standard" of the niche.

Buy new. Buying S/H will save you a couple of hundred £ but at the expense of having no warranty or back up. To me, the relatively small cash saving is not worth it. If it was a £1000 cash saving then yes, I'd buy S/H...

The Full Monty was/is an alloy gravel bike from Planet X, I paid £700 new for the Apex one.
Good bike, better run tubeless with a carbon seat post to give a bit more compliance.
Currently theres a glut. But if Wiggle/crc/etc go down and in a year or so beyond that, prices will clime back up.
Look at fox factory forks. 3, 4 months ago you could get one for under 500. Now they're back up to 800-1100
