My ancient Montane Singletrack has finally given up the ghost. What light packable waterproof will keep me dry for a couple of hours without costing a fortune? And yes I have looked at the many threads on this topic but was hoping for some new insight.
Not costing a fortune = less than £100

Keela Saxon.

Just back from an absolute hosing in my mine, riding with the dog for an hour and a half through the woods.

Best detailed jacket I've owned - and I've owned many. Made in Fife too,

How does the Saxon fit on the bike?

I'm still looking for something to use when I don't want to use my Gore Shakedry, e.g. off-road and under rucsacks. Problem is I've been spoilt by the fit of the Shakedry, proper long arms and dropped bum...

OP - Galibier Tourmalet gets excellent reviews, £65. I just didn't quite get on with the fit on the road bike, think my shoulders are too 'rounded' so it bunched up under the armpits when I was on hoods and drops.

I got a dhb Aeron eVent jacket for £60 a couple of years ago that's been fantastic, I've used it for road gravel and enduro type stuff so it's been pretty muddy. They don't sell it anymore but perhaps something like this is comparable, unbranded fabric though, not eVent

How does the Saxon fit on the bike?

Really well - arms are plenty long enough on me, and it has thumb loops too.

Slightly dropped bum - not as excessive as my old Gore waterproof but more dropped than my (really old!) Freestyle jackets.

(I'm 6ft 1 and have the large).

Have a look at Rohan - not bike specific but really breathable and some really good reductions in the sale ATM - I've got a helix - packs small, keeps the rain out and breathes better than anything I've used other than Paramo. Helix will b a bit over budget but the next model would be great

Hmm, that sounds positive!

Was comparing with a Gore-tex Active Shell C5. Do you reckon the Saxon is similarly breathable?

(until recently I just assumed all waterproofs would be much of a muchness but tried one very well reviewed jacket which was so sweaty I sent it straight back, didn't even feel guilty about sending back a worn jacket as it was almost tantamount to false advertising selling it as breathable!).

How does the Saxon fit on the bike?

I bought a small and a medium and ended up sending both back. The medium was huge and the small managed to be both too short in the arms and really flappy on the torso.

Mrs has got this one (the women version) - she prefers it to her Paramo - really light, keeps the rain out and breathes better than anything she's used before

Galibier Tourmalet - picked mine up in a sale for £42. Brilliant bit of kit (as is most of their stuff to be honest).

personally, I like a Fjern Orkan, off Sports Pursuit. I know Fjern is the in house brand, but i've got a few of their items, and they're all pretty good.

The Orkan is tight fitting, very breathable as it's eVent, and very light. They do another, that's not quite as waterproof, but it a lot more breathable, and even lighter

My son just bought one of these, and slight odd looks aside, it is a brilliant thing.

You can get a Madison DTE for under £100 if you shop around. Love mine- it's a Proper Waterproof, ie really for bad weather not for showers, but I pretty much lived in it in some shitty days in teh alps, crashed in it a few times too.
