If using something like:

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/lighting-spares/black-origin8-eyelet-stub-light-mount/

mounted to a mid fork boss, and needing the light to see with on rural back lanes in the pitch black (as opposed to being seen), does the front wheel throw a shadow that kills the spread of light?

Since most lights are designed to be mounted at bar or helmet level and throw light out and down, you're going to limit the light you can actually see by. It won't throw as far. I've always thought low mount lights are OK with other lights and when you need to be seen more than see.

Yes, you get a big shadow cast by the front wheel unless you have two, otherwise fork crown is better

Yes, I've done this and it throws a shadow. I also use a joystick on my helmet which helps if I want to see.

P.s. it's on Surly Straggler fork

Cheers. Using an Ortlieb Ultimate bar bag & have fitted their accessory mounts to fit a light, but it's bloody fugly, was wondering if the above would be any good. I'll stick with the Ortlieb periscope mount then. Ta

I've had a light mounted mid fork, it's not unrideable, but the shadow is disconcerting.

I reckon lights are better lower down because you can point them further out without blinding drivers.
