Anyone ever had an agreement with a shop to hand over a Bikes to Work voucher as a line of credit?

Don't want a new bike this year, and I know it pretty much violates all the rules, but ....

I think the LBS has to declare what bike you've purchased and register its serial number on the national database. So they might be unwilling to do "funny business". Best thing is to ask them directly

Oh yeah, I'll have to ask around as I suspect many wouldn't due to it being such a long way from the acceptable under the rules of the scheme. However, I do know people who've bought flash wheels and such like without a bike, so some are obviously not too bothered.

Just wondered if anyone else had been cheeky enough to try it.

I sure one scheme lets you buy accessories, like helmet, shoes, jacket, lights type thing. but use it as credit I think you be VERY lucky if someone said yes.
So worth asking.

Don't forget the shop pays 10-15% of the voucher too.

I've heard tales of shops tha will bend the rules a while back but seems like the systems are a bit more robust these days and there's more checks

The official advice from the tax man clearly states that an accessories only purchase is fine, as long as it is accessories for use while cycling to work. I've done this myself to purchase lights at the beginning of this winter, and a kids seat for taking my son to nursery, both legitimate purchases and not some dodgy excuse for an upgrade masquerading as a commuting requirement, neither the shop or my employer had any issues. This was on the Edinburgh Bicycle scheme FWIW.

The cyclescheme version lets you buy accessories too. Clothing needs to have a "safety" aspect but that covered by a bit high vis or reflective. Child seats are allowed but not bike trailers for some reason. Some accessories are also deemed as being 0 value after a year so you won't have to pay a final fee on them, helmets I think.
