Hello, can i replace an octalink bottom bracket with an external bb when i upgrade the chainset on my Trek mamba 29er. I don't fully understand the sizes and choices.
Also looking for some grippier tyres for upcoming wetter months, not willing to break the bank, so any advice would be appreciated.
Also why i am here i am thinking of upgrading the Rockshox xc32 100mm forks to a set of Manitou tower expert 120mm forks, does this sound like a good idea?
Many thanks
Chris
You can replace the chainset with an external bb one, get a shimano one. Obviously you'll need the right tools to remove one and fit the other.
I'd be a bit more cautious replacing the forks as an extra 20mm and the non G2 fork will slow the steering down a bit.
You don't need a Shimano BB you can fit Hope and a few others. I thought the Shimano one's were a bit shabba, so I spalshed out and fit a Hope ceramic. Never had a minutes bither with it and it looks nice too.
Re the bb- you can only change bb if you plan on changing the cranks too Ie ht2 cranks and bb or octalink cranks and octalink bb.
What frame do you have? Provided it's not too old ala 2001 then the extra 20 mm of travel shouldn't hurt the ride characteristics too much but consider a better rockshox fork rather than the manitou purely as manitou parts are hard to come by should you need spares, plus rockshox make some very good forks.
