My dad has a Trek Marlin which is 3x7 Shimano Tourney. He's ridden the drivetrain into the ground and the lot needs replacing. He lives in Canada so it's a bit tricky for me to sort it out for him, local shops have quoted him 330 bucks to sort it! If it was me I'd just stick 2x10 or 3x10 on it for him as he does a lot of mixed gravel/rail trail stuff loaded so needs the range.
His chainrings are riveted to the cranks so they need replacing too.
Looking on CRC I've seen 10 speed double cranks, 7 speed cassette and 9speed chain all for £85. Is this an option, will they play nicely, 7/8 speed chains seem hard to find.
The next option is a new shifter and 10 speed conversion.

Is the shop quote for 7 speed stuff or more recent? If it's more recent stuff it's probably pretty reasonable, assuming that's dollars not pounds. I don't think mixing between speeds like you describe will work very well.
7 speed free hubs are narrower and won’t take a cassette with more sprockets. Doesn’t sound likely that you’ll be able to swap the free hub for a 9/10/11 speed one. New wheel?
Beginning to sound like a new/second hand but recent bike would be a better option.
The quote is in $CAD for a 7 speed refresh. The freehub probably has a spacer to accept 7 speed? 9 speed chain on 7 speed cassette works from my limited research, the only problem I can see is the chainring/chain interface.
Might be time to go 2x10 if the hub (Formula DC27) will allow.
I've just got everything I needed to go from 9 speed to 1x11 for £155 from bike-discount.de
That's not a bad shout, the limiting factor will be the rear hub. Definitely sounds like new bike time.
His other bike is 95 Nishiki I bought off a school friend which is still on the original chain. I'm not sure the idea of replacing the "new" bike will go down well...
Actually I already had a compatible chainring and freehub so budget for that too.
Yes you can stick a 7 speed cassette on a 9 speed free hub with a spacer. I’ve done this in the past. If it’s a 9 speed free hub just stick 2or1x10 on though surely?
I think it's a 9 speed freehub with a spacer but will need to get him to confirm.
Looking at the spec, the 8spd model is listing the same hub. Get him to take a pic?

If he can do the work himself, sure. But if he's paying a shop to do it, they will have to order parts through official channels and he'll have to pay retail prices, plus labour. So $330 is not surprising to completely replace the entire drivetrain.
If moving from 3x7 to 2x10 then shifters, front mech and rear mech will be an issue and if on some Tourney then brake levers required too, also bottom bracket, chainset..... the price doesn’t appear too bad for whatever solution!

It will work but you have to drop a sprocket, I did it recently on an old 7sp hub. Got a new 11-32 9sp cassette, took the 11t end and 12t off and refitted with a spare 12t end sprocket. 8 gears but using a 9sp shifter.
If the chain rings are riveted on he will need a new crank.nothing wrong with 7 spd stuff and a triple.an 8 spd chain will work.parts can be had for 7 and 8 spd cheaply.there are two types of 7 spd cassette.normal type and those with a built in freehub.

There is only one kind of cassette, the latter is a freewheel which you can still get up to 10 speed.
Yeah but the wheel may not have a freewheel.
Yeah but the wheel may not have a freewheel.why modernise it.not worth the effort and cost.just replace.
Thanks all, he's gone to another shop and they doing a full 7speed replacement for about half his original price.
I looked up his cranks, they can be had for £20, I guess they rivet the rings on because they don't expect the bike to be ridden more than a few times before being thrown in the back of the shed and forgotten.
If the chain is replaced often when it stretches a crank will last years.get him a chain checking tool for his birthday.then he knows when to take it to a bike shop.8 spd seam chains are very cheap online so he could order one and then get a bike shop to fit it.

Who said anything about modernising? I was simply correcting your statement.
I did not mean to combine the statement
