Hi all

I have 1* 11 speed ultegra on my cross bike and a set of R785 di2 shifters.

Assuming the chain, cassette and cranks can be reused, what would I need to make this a di2 1* groupset.

I'm guessing rear mech, junction box and internal battery plus some cables Anything else?

Are there any websites to work out specifically which parts I need?

Thanks

There was a thread on this recently but not sure I can find it.

I think ideally a front junction box - there are 3 main options for this. 3 port junction box a that clips under the stem, there’s an end of handlebar one that replaces a bar plug that has cables routed internally through the bars or an XT 3 port one with a display on it. The latter has Bluetooth built in if that’s something you want.

It’s then a very long cable run to the rear mech so I’d probably stick in a junction box b down near the bb (quite cheap for one of these boxes). You’ll need a rear mech to box b cable, battery to box b cable, box b to box a cable, then right shifter to box a cable. Up to you if you wish to add in a separate Bluetooth module if you don’t go with the xt display. You’ll need an extra cable for that if you do (it’s an inline module so mine sits between junction box b and a.

The costs add up surprisingly quickly - make sure you give yourself plenty of cable length between the rear mech and junction box b - mine wasn’t far off the length of the b to a surprisingly.

Nope, pretty much as per your list.

My setup is R shifter cable through the bars to Bluetooth sender (WU111?) then short 150mm cable to bar end junction box, JB -> LH shifter, LH shifter to JB-B (dangling around in the downtube) then cables to rear mech through seat stay and battery (also in the downtube, wrapped in bubble wrap, seat tube is too narrow to fit it in there) and have a spare port on the JB-B to add a front mech on if I want.

I swap between two rear mechs (and matched chains) Ultegra RX for road (works with my 9-34 cassette) and a XT one that pairs with a larger cassette on my proper gravel wheels. GRX wasn't an option at the time, but that's what I'd choose now, especially as Shimano have locked out the XT as a valid combination on recent firmware upgrades, it still works, but the customisations aren't available through the e-tube app.

Don't forget to budget for a charger (unless you already have one of course)
