The purchase of a second hand Heckler frame has caused a complete re-jig of my bikes. Ive sold my 2 trail bikes, and am considering what to get to complement the Heckler. I am 93kg and 5'11", and reasonably fit, but no racer.

My Regular riding is local trails - not mountains, but fairly hilly, muddy in the winter, with the odd little jump/dropoff.

I also ride Bedgebury red/black, Friston Forest and the South Downs

I am off to the Alps this summer, hence the Heckler. I also plan the odd trip to Wales/Peaks.

For my second bike, I have a budget of @£1300. I am currently thinking either Canyon Nerve XC 7 or go back to a light HT, say a On One 456 Frame and self build.

My Heckler will be built with 150 Revs, to about 28.5 lbs, so I want something to complement this.

Any Ideas?

A 456 won't be light, no matter how much money you throw at it - I know, I've tried.

There is no such weight as 'about', weigh it - it'll be more...

Well that was constructive, wasnt it??? I guess all the sensible people are actually out riding. Well, about 28.5 lb - maybe 28.4, maybe 28.6. Depending how many washers/shims/heli tape I use, knowing the exact weight of all the components I am using.

Any responses to the actual question???

Depends on if the Heckler would be suitable for your local duties or what type of bike you want really. We can all say a lightweight hardtail but if you find them uncomfortable then it's not good.

I have a 5" trail bike and if I had another bike it would be a hard tail with 100mm up front and the ability to lock the suspension out so when I have more road type rides in the winter it will cope okay. Alternatively I could get rid of the 5" bike completely and have a lighter XC full suss with lockout front and rear...

Too many options!!

PS what about a 29er?

I'd go for a hardtail.

in your quiver, the minimum steed-count should be:

1 DH sled
1 AM rig
1 aggressive XC beast
1 race thoroughbred
1 phatty
1 realsteel ss

My FS is shorter travel (turner flux) than yours and is complemented by a alfine geared hardtail 29er (niner sir9) for bridleway duty and winter riding in the gloopy muddy south downs. The flux does most of the work home and away for 8 months of the year and the ht most of the work locally only in the winter. Works for me.

Totally horses for courses - probably you are the only person who can answer. Why/when would you not be on the heckler? Then work out which bike is best for those conditions/geography/occasion.

Scaredypants, this is STW, a road, touring and cx bike must be present, as must a ti hardtail. None must be ridden mind!

I ride regularly at bedgebury, I've had a fs bike, but much prefer my 100mm travel hardtail for riding round there. I found the fs (140mm) was too much bike. Haven't tried friston yet, but keep meaning to!

I'd say either a hardtail, or a short travel fs would be find for 90% of the riding around here.

A bike to compliment your Heckler, WTF.

You will buy something else and prefer one or the other, there will be no complimenting.

Winter xc hardtail, preferably with hub gears.

Perfect companion for my 5" trail bike is my Kona Explosif with Reba's, Alfine 8, Tubeless.

Its been through many guises, light XC, (horrible and twitchy) singlespeed, (OK until the novelty wears off) roadie conversion, (looks silly and slower than a road bike) and since January, its been Alfine'd.

Since January, its been my most ridden bike. At the moment, it is just a half hours work to convert to singlespeed, (different chain and wheel) and a little longer to swap the middle ring for an outer ring and swap the tyres for some road bashing. (though recent road bike addition means this isn't required anymore)

Alfine'd, it is near silent to ride, unstoppable in the mud, and still has the direct feel of a singlespeed. I only road my full suss today because the rear brake lever has lost a circlip and only a bit of gaffer tape stopped the master cylinder guts from falling out for 30 out of 35 South Down miles last week.

(Obviously, if the Alfine is tempting, you need a bike with an EBB, horizontal, or slidey dropouts to avoid using a tensioner)
