I have quite a few MTB Athletes on FaceAche & Instaspam and most of the stuff they share/ post is Ok for anyone to look at and not find it offensive or inappropriate.
Now to my mind if you're an Athlete you should be promoting a positive healthy life style (don't thing most would disagree) most of them post up end of season party/drinks etc which is also fine.
But Danny Hart posted this earlier:
Now I don't have an issue with the beer, 'cos most people have the odd one or two after a ride. But not sure about the smoking....
What message does that convey to the younger fans?
You have to wonder if that's why he was rubbish on the flat pedally sections last season......
So is it not ok, or am I being a snowflake?
Full disclosure I have never smoked, my parents did until their 60'sand so did the rest of my family (it also contributed to some of theirs demise...) so to my mind smoking sucks.
Ginger beer is not alcoholic.
Agree with you on smoking though (lost my mum to lung cancer), however, everyone has a choice, athletes included.
I’m just disappointed it’s not a joint,
I think many MTB athletes and influencers are dicks, and so are many of their fans.
Of more concern is the terrible spelling and grammar.
The smoking isn’t great (and I find it bizarre that anyone into mountain biking at any level smokes or vapes) but these pros are only human.
Whether it’s a great idea to put it up on Instagram is another question, I can’t imagine it going down well with sponsors…
Fair point hadn't realised it was non alcoholic..........
Now I don’t have an issue with the beer, ‘cos most people have the odd one or two after a ride. But not sure about the smoking...
That's not being a snowflake, it's just being subjective.
It's his career, health, life, etc. Unless the issue is with all the sugar in the ginger beer?
It's just riding bikes down a hill. It's not like they have to pedal to the top.
Jesus Christ, I was expecting another drunk/drugs/sexual violence thread. I don't smoke and don't recommend it but smoking a cigarette is really at the minor end of the scale. Ginger beer is a soft drink. You're a snowflake on this one.
Why an Australian ginger beer though?
I can remember once googling whether a film would be suitable for my kids. I stumbled into a very bizarre world. I found films that have implied nudity. This means the person is shown in a way where you can’t tell if the person is wearing cloths. Like a silhouette of a person swimming.
So now we have implied smoking. It’s a picture of a soft drink on a dirty table. The fag butts look horrible and I haven’t started smoking yet
Whatever you do, don't let your kids watch classic movies.

Yes you're definitely a hand wringing snowflake. Seriously, who cares?
I think many MTB athletes and influencers are dicks, and so are many of their fans.
True facts.
Of more concern is the terrible spelling and grammar.
Have you met any of the Hart family?
I think you'd be surprised at these other stuff a lot of pros put in their bodies between seasons if you think a roll up is bad 😅
With a few super serious exceptions (gwin for eg) the rest are young guys and girls in an extreme sport lifestyle who love having fun....
I think there are bigger concerns on YouTube than smoking cigarettes.

Why an Australian ginger beer though?
It's quite a nice ginger beer, tbf... Given the choice between Bundy or Idris or whatever its called in the UK I would take the Bundy.
Snowflake? Drip moor like 😉
Fanny Fart in being a fanny shocker.
Don't ever watch old copies of Sprung, you'll shit a brick 🙄
Danny is essentially a massive scally, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.
Don’t ever watch old copies of Sprung, you’ll shit a brick 🙄
Or 'King of the Road' on Vice. Who knew skateboarding could give you nightmares?
There are rules against promoting smoking on other media, why should YouTube be any different?
Is an ashtray promoting smoking?
Outrageous behaviour, should be setting an example like fine fellows

Genuinely tho, someone in downhill smoking and drinking ginger beer is a long way down my list of worrying examples being set.
Wasn't #peaty practically sponsored by Stella bitd?
Anyway, move on nothing to see here...
You better not read or listen to the Rob Warner interview on STW then! It wouldn’t do for us all to be paragons of virtue, wouldn’t it be chuffin boring?
I love an Idris so I'm going to have to find a Bundaberg and see if alpin is correct.
An athlete may represent a sponsor/employer and I guess they will have an agreed responsibility to behave in a manner approved of by that sponsor but otherwise nope.
If you don't like what I do do else where.
Why an Australian ginger beer though
That brand also do a root beer which is very nice as root beers go.
Fairy sure an N/A beer is pretty insignificant relative to some of his counterparts. I never heard anyone complain about Steve Peat's affinity with Stella.
Not sure smoking is a great idea, and may not have helped his results.
IMO, it shows a very poor attitude to PR, which when he's job hunting is really not going to help.
I’ve been slated in the past for suggesting that DH racers are not athletes. This kind of proves the point
Not really a great image for ‘professional’ sport , and neither was how many DH acted during lock downs
If a sport wants to be less minority it has to be more professional
Absolute nonsense, have you read of what pro roadies get up to in the off season?,
Wiggins went through a period fairly recently of posting pictures of himself smoking. He's retired and can do what he wants but it always struck me as odd and ever so slightly irresponsible given his influence on up and coming athletes.
You have to remember that these are just normal people though (with a bit more talent than most) and navigating (sometimes badly) through life like the rest of us.
Mmm Bundaberg. Just don't look how much sugar is in it.
Massive overreaction.
Already bee covered but all I could think of replying initially was
Of more concern is the terrible spelling and grammar.
How many World Champs have you won then?!
Name your sport, name your smoker: Blanco (rugby); Zidane, Lampard and numerous others (football); Ferrer (tennis); Warne (cricket)...
People do understand that not everything written or shown on social media is real or factual don’t they?

Meh. Im glad there's a home for wild and lairy characters in mountain biking even though it's a bit sterile these days. I'm not interested in the achievements of clean-cut boy scouts.
I think that's partly why I've drifted back to skating and BMX videos. I'd rather watch Swampfest than any professional cycling.

I'd rather the sport had a soul tbh.
Not a fan of Danny at all, but that post annoys me much less than the “can’t be pictured without a can of noxious shite in hands at all times” you get with Red Bull athletes.
Christ yes. Rachel Athertons posts recently have been excruciatingly cringy. She's ****ing retired and still peddling the shite.
"Bull Piss helps me perform and made me a world champion"
Some rando - "not the fact you trained hard, had coaching and proper diets"
"No, it was the Bull Piss"
Aye, right ye are then.
Amazing how you can lose respect for someone...

Have you ever ridden a proper DH course at race speed without stopping? They are athletes.

So true. What’s even worse is that all RB athletes get special cans called athlete cans that just contain water so they don’t have to actually drink the stuff
It's a Redcar thing a "tab n a bundy", I'm reckoning hes got a ginger beer and sat down, seen the ash tray and was reminded of the saying.
Combined with not having any sponsor going into the next season and a ton of sponsors seemingly requiring a big social media following/interaction/influencer type of thing hes probably thinking "I've got a ton of followers maybe i just need to post more and interact more" especially since hes been hanging out with Adam Brayton quite a bit lately it's probably been on his mind and just put 2 n 2 together thinking it was a good idea to just put some more content up for quantity purposes.

People actually think the athletes drink the stuff???

Not a very good thought process then. Athlete and smoking dont really mix in the same sentence.
**** me! Judgemental much you lot?
Definitely snowflake. Get over yourself.
Sometimes this place is offendedofmiddleenglandtrackworld
As for this sh**

Slated for good reason it seems. Athletes aren't role models, they're humans. WTF does "professional" mean anyway?
Im sure they do RB are brilliant at marketing
LOL you REALLY have a thing with RedBull as a company don't you 😀 it really amuses me just how angry/bitter you are about them,
He's not actually smoking, it's a strange joke. There's a strange joke within DH about smoking, Gregg Minaar, Amaury Pierron and others have posted pictures of them smoking.
It's a bit of a weird post, but it's not like he's shitting in his hand and throwing it at people #OldSkoolMountainBikingVideos
TBH, if he was on a team, I reckon he'd probably think twice before throwing up an image like that, but currently he's not sponsored, so what he posts is up to him I guess. Most of the time with stuff like this, its down to interpretation, so who knows? It may be a joke shared between friends?
Weird pic, crushed up butts in an ashtray just looks minging compared to an actual fag being smoked which might (to some) look appealing. I suspect it's a joke and he's sat at a table where someone else has left the ashtray.
I enjoy smoking perhaps two or three skinny rollies a year, but glamourising or encouraging smoking by an athlete, even in jest, is an odd choice.
Between this thread and the ebike thread it blows my mind just how sensitive some people on this forum are. Get a grip.
i saw a clip of the darts a few days ago, 1970s/80s i'd guess
'thats sportsmanship' one player jockey wlson lights his cigarette and then the rivals, they then throw some darts
very poor attitude to PR
I think this might be Hart's problem....he's not very marketable.
He is still essentially known for his slippery run at Champery and that was years ago.
His slurred speech/dialect makes it difficult for the majority of folk to understand him, but unlike Rat Boy doesn't have enough character to get away with it.
The fact that people talk openly about his old man being a bit of a dick probably doesn't help him. Not the first group of people you want to work alongside.
As for his grammar.... Didn't he quit/leave education at 16 with very little of note other than being very fast on a bike? But there are lots of MTBers as well as many other sports people who are yet to grasp basic spelling and grammar.
Imagine being that sad and tragic that you start a thread on stuff like this, based on a photo. Get a life. I bet you're one those annoying neighbours always poking their nose in where its not wanted and going around looking for things to complain about.
Imagine sitting there posting a critique of the spelling and grammar of a bunch of young'uns who basically spend all year travelling the world living the dream, having the time of their lives.
I know it's not all sunshine and roses but looking around my office right now I'd trade places in a heartbeat. Then I'd post barely legible nonsense on social media just to wind up the Dads at home.
If I had the money, I'd sponsor him in a heartbeat. Stick him on a decent bike with a good team behind him and I reckon he'd be back up there. I doubt he'll ever be 2011 fast again, he's older and has a kid, which the responsibility of, obviously slows most guys down somewhat but I still think that with decent support he's got a few good years left.
Really weird to write that when he was just a (very quick) junior when I was racing dragons. Time flies 🙄
If I had the money, I’d sponsor him in a heartbeat.
I wouldn't. I remember getting pointed in the direction of his Dad's FB page after hearing all the other stories. And then I got pointed in the direction of his missus' FB page.
Maybe he's a nice decent person but I wouldn't want anything to do with the people around him.
If he was smoking there is nothing wrong with that, i.e. it is legal to do so. There is also not much wrong with it for a young downhill rider as it won't make a lot of difference. Continue to smoke for another 30 years then you would see a big difference.
The bigger question is - shoulnd't he be vaping like everyone else? I hardly see anyone smoking these days whereas when I smoked in 80s and 90s it seems way more common.
Stick him on a decent bike with a good team behind him and I reckon he’d be back up there.
He's been on two decent bikes.... He's fast yes... he's up there yes... but there nowdays is sooooo tight that a couple of seconds is 15 places. Once you remove your Jackson/Loic for that weekend, whoever has had a decent run, once they're out of the equation, from say 5-20th is so so tight it's insane. You only need to lose 1/10th on a few corners, lose 0.5mph on a straight and suddenly you've gone from 6th-15th. That's the problem for him.
Up there isn't up there any more... up there is not quite there.
If I had the money, I’d sponsor him in a heartbeat. Stick him on a decent bike with a good team behind him and I reckon he’d be back up there.
I don't think he wants a team behind him. He's proven it by falling out with everyone in the past. He want to drive around in his motorhome with his Mrs .
I wouldn’t. I remember getting pointed in the direction of his Dad’s FB page after hearing all the other stories. And then I got pointed in the direction of his missus’ FB page.
Also this. They're all Brexit loving, immigrant hating, COVID denying, antivaxxer, flat earthers.
I couldn't be bothered with any of them.
(They might not be flat earthers but the other stuff definitely)
Any professional athlete is only there to be a billboard for sponsorship. As a team principal / ad manager / company owner looking to sponsor someone in the DH game would I sponsor someone who posts a photo of a dirty stinking ashtray on S.M.? The sport has moved on from the Ste Peat/Rob Warner getting hammered days.
There are plenty of other hungry riders more media savvy that would get my corporate coin instead.
The bigger question is – shoulnd’t he be vaping like everyone else? I hardly see anyone smoking these days whereas when I smoked in 80s and 90s it seems way more common.
Smoking is vinyl and vaping is CDs. Soon, there will be a resurgence of smoking as people want to stand out and get the real experience.
I suppose everyone has something that makes them clutch their pearls these days.
Honestly this is just looking for something to be offended by, Implied smoking? FFS...
There are plenty of other hungry riders more media savvy that would get my corporate coin instead.

This is where I’m coming from. I do t give two stuffs what image the sport gives, but if it wants to grown its audience and be less minority it needs to be more professional to appeal to more people, plus sponsors won’t want association with smoking
Football is by no means perfect, but my lad at 13 has social media ‘lessons’ from his club
I'm amazed that anyone would ever smoke, I lost three of my grandparents to cancer that was smoking related. And I spent my youth surrounded by a stinking cloud of cigarette smoke.
But people make their own choices, we all take risks every day, plenty unnecessarily (like mountain biking) which could also be construed as reckless.
Should have completed the Aussie vernacular with reference to a 'dart'.
That's all I can find issue with.
that bundaberg is lovely, full of sugar, home bargains special from time to time.
i agree i never got smoking, its no wonder people hate the first climb at llandegla , the stink of pot being smoked in the car park when ive been
I’m amazed that anyone would ever smoke,
I used to enjoy it. Used to enjoy drinking way too much and eating crap food too. I was in my twenties though and didn't really seem to have much affect. However, at 55 I am glad I glad up smoking 20+ years ago, and don't even touch any food with a hint of UPF about it. Am I happier though, would rather not think about that...
Maybe he’s a nice decent person but I wouldn’t want anything to do with the people around him.
I don't think many folks do. I've heard rumours that sports management companies have turned him down on the basis that they don't want to have to deal with his relations who come along free into the bargain.

@jhinwxm I'm soooo sorry for being 'sad and tragic' that I have nothing better to do.....
I honestly generally don't give a f*** what my neighbours do unless they're chopping down the woodland at the back of my house - oh how sad am I that I reported them.......
I was wondering on peoples opinion (yes we all have one and are allowed to voice it...) I just thought 'professional' sports/athletes had moved on from the 80's/90's and was about promoting healthier lifestyles (well, apart from all the Red Bull, Monster and gambling companies etc.) - shock horror that some agree with me and others don't.
I shall go back in my box and find something else to be offended by......
I'd be amazed if he actually smoked, given that his missus has gone full tin foil hat conspiracy theory with regards to big pharma, vaccines and anything else you put in your body. No need for modern medicine according to her, just grind up some tree bark. I doubt she's letting him smoke
