Got the use of a stache 5 for a couple of months that I want to use to commute on (mate is off on a long hol until xmas) - question is what tyres could I get away with on the big ol rims?
Commute will include a mile or two on towpath and then the rest slightly hilly road.
50psi is your friend if you want to reduce rolling resistance
Leave soft and squidgy for training
Or put some 29 wheels in
Schwalbe says that for a 45/50mm internal rim width, you need a tyre size of 70mm. That's 2.7"
Vee Speedster 29x2.8. Failing that the Surly Knards get quicker the more they wear
I've had 2.4 tyres on Surly 50mm rims with no problems. Though you'll find that with a bit more pressure the 3" tyres roll surprisingly well.
I think the biggest 29er Speedstar size is 29x2.3, £8 each at PX.
Been wondering about a pair for my FatNotFat 29er wheels for a while, but they aren't light at ~780g (according to PX blurb, Vee says ~670g), they apparently "self steer" at lowish pressures and small stones can get wedged in that central honeycomb section (eventually piercing the carcass).
I'd love to take the gamble on their long term wear on tarmac with a pair of Schwalbe Big Ones, but I might wait until the newly announced 29x2.35 "G-One Allround" hits the stores.

Don't spoil it, embrace it, and then you'll have a fat bike to love and cherish until you part.
