Preparing to order a new bike with a new Ultegra groupset (presuming 12spd unless 11spd groupsets are still available from distributors) but have a new and unridden 11sped (R8000?) chainset.
Am sure I'd heard this combo was a no-no, something to do with chains dropping (or is that just professional riders putting out mega watts or changing under duress?). Some lazy googling suggested it might be fine though.
Anyone tried it?

Don't know first hand, but for the 'official' advice Shimano do handy product compatibility charts.
Edit: ah, ignore. Doesn't indicate any cross-compatibility between speeds.

Can you pair the 12s rings withg the 11s cranks - same BCD?

No, it's a frameset only, am buying the groupset separately and shop said they can supply groupset without cranks (think there's a crank shortage anyway!). Just saving cash as already have brand new 11spd cranks needing a home and don't mind sticking with 11spd if it's still available.
Check on weightweenies, a few have done it successfully.
Chainline is different (1mm or so) but ring spacing is either "close enough" or the same, depending on who you believe.
As several people have got it to work, i guess those who haven't either have a frame which is towards one end or the other of the tolerance band (short stays, angle between stay and seat tube, size of gear hanger) or are just hamfisted.
