hi - cable snapped and broken end is still in the shifter somewhere. The shifter isn't working now, presumably because the frayed end is jamming it up, so I can't get access to push the broken end out - any clues?

thanks

I think to shift so you can see the cable you need tension on it.

I've had this problem when the lever has been shifted with no cable. Not sure how easy it will be with a broken bit of cable in there but if you peel the hood off and slightly press the brake lever you can see the ratchet mechanism. You need to shift and gently push it with something at the same time. I used a small screw driver. It was fiddly but I got there.

Some of the outer plastic can easily be unscrewed once the hoods off

If it's like the 105 I had an issue with then there is an access panel underneath. Took me a while to realise that is in two parts as only one has a retaining screw. I found it far easier to remove the lever from the bars.

As above. Plastic off and if you can get to the highest gear you should see the frayed cable. Then go fishing with long nosed pliers. My 11 speed did this. It’s a pain.

Common problem with Shimano STI shifters - the cable frays and snaps on the metal edge of the shifter body. Try Youtube for videos

mine is an old 6500. I can't shift it with a screw driver. There doesn't seem to be an inspection cover. To get the plastic cover off it looks like I need to unscrew the 6mm(?) nut at the front of the shifter, which I suspect will lead to loads of springs all over the place........
