Had some great route advice here before so: Spending next week in Ullapool, will have road and mountain bike. Looking for some route suggestions - not found much in the usual places online.

Did Torridon last year and very tempted to pop over that way for a day. Anything more local anywhere near as good?

Also got time for a big day out in the cairngorms on the way up. Blair Atholl to aviemore via larig ghru a terrible idea?

Thanks

A very good idea if you like a few hours of hikabike over boulder fields. Other routes might be more fun. there are a few

I'm sure someone will come along with better info on the LG, but just in case they don't, caveat Volvo.
I did the bit up to the old hut location last year. It was one of my bestest rides ever, but there was just enough old unmade path to make it quite clear what a ballbreakingly crushingly awful experience the full LG would be if there was more than a few km of old 'path'

If they ever get round to rebuilding the whole trail then it would be beyond amazing, but I don't think they have.

Over to someone else who actually knows what they're talking about....
Anyone?

Don't do the Lairig Ghru. Trust me on this.

The Cairngorm Loops route goes through the Gaick pass to Glen Tromie and would work fine. A longer and more scenic option would be Blair Atholl - Tilt - Geldie - Feshie - Aviemore.

There have been a few threads recently on routes in the NW (of which there are really surprisingly few). Poolewe-Carnmore-Return is fabulous with being too committed.

The Arkle Loop from Lone/Achfary is very wild and has a couple of route-finding difficulties to keep you on your toes.

The Arkle loop as Colin says: Lone, stalking path over to Gobernuisgach Lodge, up Glen Golly, take the faint left hand track at the top of Creag Dubh. This is an old stalking path and isn't well maintained. Down to the lochan then up to Bealach Horn and back down to Lone.

Dundonnell/Corrie Hallie, up the road, alongside Loch a Bhraoin, down to Loch an Nid, in to Strath na Sealga then back over by the landrover track to Corrie Hallie.

The Tollie path as an out and back from Poolewe. Plus Poolewe - Carnmore return.

If you want an adventure try and link up some of the black dashed lines in the area and let us know how you get on 😉

Thanks for the ideas. Will give LG a miss, did the bottom part at the Aviemore end a couple of years ago and it was great, sounds like that is the best/only way to ride it.

Plenty of showers forecast, will take my snorkel for the bogs
