I know the wheelset I want built and it seems really simple but I am struggling to find someone who will build it.

I want...

Hope Pro 4 32h 6bolt (15mm front 142x12 rear)
Black spokes
700c rims with a 23mm internal width (open to suggestions)
Sram XD driver

This doesn't seem like a massive ask.

Who do you guys use?

Scotroutes,

Can I email you?

None of my local LBS do custom wheel builds sadly.

Who's local?

I'm in Reading, I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

LOL. What I meant was that I'd simply build them myself. That way I always get exactly what I want. Sorry but I dont do it for anyone else.

Learn to do it. It's enjoyable and relaxing and you are then happier about maintaining them too.

I recently used DCR Wheels and found them to be really helpful, quick and well priced - worth asking for a quote.

Ok, So just to confirm.

I don't want to learn to build them myself. I don't have the time or the inclination.

Out of the 4 or 5 'local' bike shops I would be happy to use none of them offer a custom wheelbuild service.

Wheelcraft. Aside from [s]the black spokes[/s] 'Big Al' being a boring, pompous arse, and not building what you actually asked for..

FTFY*

*From what I hear, he has also had some QA issues of late too, getting on a bit and living off his rep are oft repeated...

I have used Neil at George Hall Cycles in Market Harborough for my last few builds - Has a good reputation locally, and if he can't ge the parts you can usually buy them and have them delivered to him.

https://247cycleshop.com is the website, but give him a call

Thread's been running 15 minutes now, you'd be onto the tensioning stage by now. It's really not a difficult or time consuming job.

I always used Neil Walker, though he's a bit pompous as well! good builder though, and always very well priced. I supplied my last hubs and rims for him, he supplied the spokes and all in it cost me 60 quid the pair.

Since the shop shut, I dunno if he's still doing builds, as he's working for a distributor now, Kinesis or whoever it is that distributes those.

Locally, Wee Boles is good too, and buil;ding a good reputation, builds for a few of the local road clubs - fresh suspension services below -

Neil was my go to locally, built and repaired assorted wheels over the last few years - mostly repairing wheels built by other people...he's now Mr Cube for the North....

Will take a look at fresh - - not too far away - ta

I was going to recommend JRA - have a lovely set of Hope / SON 700c wheels from them - but it looks like they're not doing custom builds anymore, more like an off-shelf option. I've had a wheel jig and dish tool knocking about in the garage for a while now, one day I'll get round to using it.

JRA do less custom and do their own hubs now. Used them before and decent build, but takes a long time.

I've had two builds off PT Cycles though that have been great, and for me they've got a good selection of DT Swiss stuff which I'm quite a fan of at the moment especially the hubs, rather than stock stuff with noisy Hope hubs which is what most people seem to want.

Both claim to bed in the spokes, and retention etc, so in theory they are less likely to need truing a few rides in. All the built wheels from them have been spot on. Unlike off the shelf wheels I've had.

Paul Hewitt/Ride On/Merlin.
Spa.

All very good wheels, Spa can be interesting to deal with now and then.

Ask around locally, you probably won't even get any sanctimonious bores telling you to learn to do it yourself instead.

Find your closest lbs that would do custom wheels and travel to them. always better because then when you bust a spoke on wednesday and you want to ride on Sat local lads will get the job done, build up a relationship and you get good service.. mostly, any mtb groups local on fb to ask?

Harry Rowland down in Ramsgate is really good and @stevegeall good as well in Bournemouth, can post stuff. I did the Cytech wheel building course and really enjoyed it, do my own stuff now, but previously always used 2 above.

Mark (owner), or Phil (all things Hope)

I've got Mark built ones on my CX and Phil built ones on my SS. Both bombproof.

Doesn't 700c = ISO 622 = 29" ?

If so, what you're asking for is this?

I used to laugh at Big Al's hatred of black spokes, but seeing how often I have to clean my spoke machine when working with black spokes I think he's got a point.

A bike shop that can't build wheels isn't a real bike shop.

How do they even call themselves bikes shops? If a mechanic can't build a wheel, I'm not sure I'd trust them with anything else!

Its a shame JRA don't do custom anymore, the wheels they have built for me over the years have been superb. Interestingly all the wheels I had from them came with what felt like super high spoke tension. Everything else I've had built have been nowhere near. JRA wheels took some serious abuse and never caused any issues, other bike shop built wheels not so much.

Bought the 29" Hope Tech Enduros, I had the 27.5" Versions on my BFe and loved them. I was just being dumb and not twigging that 29 and 700c are the same.

Big up for all your advice

Cheers

James

The spec doesn't even sound custom - sure there's lots of people offering that spec of wheel all but off the shelf

Harry Rowland builds my wheels. He knows what he likes (and does not like) - doesn't like alloy nipples, but did black spokes/nipples on Mavic CXPs for me.

Big Al for the win at Wheel craft. 01360 312 709.

What you might wish to consider are H Plus Son Hydras. Rea!ly rather good rims. Excellent quality in build into a very good wheel.

Typical of the 'I want it now generation. Happy to pay for someone to do it for you. You'll be wanting someone else to ride you're bike for you next! For a fee of course. Not me! No siree. I cast and forge my own alloys these days. I don't simply 'build' my own wheels - i bloody make them! 😉

p.s. got a set of tech enduros myself - decent wee wheel

H Plus Son Hydras are way too narrow for the OP if he wants 23mm internal - they’re 23mm external, so likely to be 18mm internal. They’re also all style, no substance. Polished turds.

Any near North London?

Ive got an expensive mtb wheel to repair and attempts to talk to places in Peterborough and Cambridge have failed, but really need this wheel fixed soon, reliably.
