Hi

I'm compiling a website that details place to ride in the UK and have a section dedicated to UK Trail Centres. I've managed to map a few over the last 18 months but as you can imagine there are many more trails then 1 man can ride in that time.

I was wondering if any you GPS using folk have any that I don't and wouldn't mind donating them to the site in the form of a GPX or TCX file?

The section on Trail Centres on the site is here.. justgoride.co.uk

Also if I've missed a centre, can you let me know and I'll get it added!

Replies here would be great or my email is in my profile..

Thanks in advance..

Pete

That's the first map I've seen that tries to show all of the UK trail centres on it. Very useful. Shame it's not a google map 😉

Can't help you with your GPS, but good luck to you.

The Trails themselves are on google maps. I'm not a fan of google maps that have too many points on them as I reckon they are a bit messy, so I avoided using it on the main map.

Thanks for the feedback though!

I was testing out my new Dakota 20 last week at Dalby & recorded the red route - if it's any use to you?

Brilliant.. Just the kind of thing I'm after!

I've uploaded it, you can find it in two places...

Trail Centre View

Route View

Thanks! A bit cheeky I know but do you fancy writing a quick review of the trail?

Most of the trail centres are mapped on bikely.com (GPX etc) as it's a user-submitted database of GPS routes, see what you can pick up there.

Thanks Rorschach

I didn't even know those existed.. I might have to pen a visit in - I'm in Wales for a week of riding soon!!

They'll take a little longer to add to the site as I'll need to add them to the database but I'll get onto it asap!

Thanks coffeeking..

I'm just a little wary of 'raping' a load of routes off another site so I thought I'd ask the good folk of singletrack first. I may have to hunt for a few though.. There's so many trails in the Brecons alone!

Hi Rachel

I've actually coded up the OS openspace maps. They are hidden from view at the moment as they are UK specific - i.e. they won't work with a route in france or the US etc... I also need to check out the copyright issues with allowing print outs. I'm definetly on the case with them though!

Thanks

Pete

How concerned are you about how accurate the .gpx files are?

I've got quite a lot of trail centre routes tracked but I'd struggle to find many that didn't deviant slightly from the published route, be it due to temporary diversions or whatever.

Whatever you have is great. I have loads of empty mapped routes so even if its a map is a little out it will still give a flavor of the trail. I'd guess that nobody would actually use them for navigation, being waymarked and all. 😉 Could you email them over?

Thanks!

Just a quick message to say a big thanks to every one who has sent trails through. The Trail Centre page is starting to fill up. 🙂

I still need to add the extra trail centres that have been suggested but I've been a bit snowed under. I'm hoping to get these on soon!

Missing:

Yorkshire; Stainburn, Wharncliffe, Guisborough
Lancashire; Lee Quarry, Crag(g) Quarry, Billinge Woods

The extent of trails and their degree of construction are all varied but there's a few missing. How that fits with what you're intending to do / provide, I don't know.

TBH, I'd recommend you buy a couple of the recent guidebooks that have attempted to do what you also seem to be aiming at. Then, if not just straightforwardly copying out the spots they list, at least use it as a cross check.

There's some info on some to the spots listed above at www.singletraction.org.uk

Bedgebury is missing, as is Gisburn and Winlatter.

otherwise a good idea, good luck with it, although i've not got any gpx files to donate to the cause.

My plan is to do a bit of research into all of the suggestions I have so far. I really want to keep it to completed official waymarked trails and leave other trails to be uploaded in the routes section of the site. It sometime quite difficult to source the info without actually riding the trails though. I guess it will take some time to compile it into a complete resource.

Aiming to achieve the same thing as moredirt.com?

Not that it matters. There are plenty of places on the web that do the same "thing" either better, worse or just a bit differently for all sorts of info.

You might have it covered but I would worry about the reliability and currency of information harvested from a bunch of randoms on the web (no disrespect 😉

There's a certain guidebook came out not too long ago and I can spot where all the info for a particular region has been harvested from a couple of sites I know. That'd be fine if it was up to date and accurate, sadly not 😉 Certainly they got the geology wrong at a number of locations.

I'm not knocking anyone for trying but there's no point ignoring the potential deficiencies and actual pitfalls.

My site is more aimed at GPS users with the main feature being the Route Catalogue. The Trail Centre section is there to highlight potential riding spots for though who prefer waymarked trails. All of the info on there so far has been compiled primarily for the various FC websites, but I'm sure you are right that some of the data is out of date!

Still I'll have a look out for this guide book if its any good!

You definitely have some valid points, I need to be careful what I upload!

In the meantime I've just created a thread in my forum detailing the suggestions so far. Feel free to keep suggesting here and i'll add them there!

im doing some of the southern welsh trail centres in summer, both me and my brother will be gps'ing all the routes so if they havent been uploaded by then i should be able to do it then.

Are you only showing major trail centres or will smaller places be shown aswell? IE Queen Elizabeth country park.

edit: just read your link doh!

Feel free to upload the routes you do via the route upload on the route search page. If one of them is a Trail in the Trail Centre section, you can just suggest the link through the Trail view... if that makes sense. 😉

A few people have suggested that. It would have to be a google map but I could do it. I might have a play around with a few ideas.

Thanks for feedback!

Your website looks very good although it isn't a first. It has already been done here http://sites.google.com/site/mtbtrailtime/

I am wondering if your website will continue to be free access once it is complete? It has the beta logo and there is a comment in the FAQ "what are the different types of membershib TBD". Do you have any plans to charge for access once your database is populated with information? I think it would be a bit cynical to get this information from us for free and then charge us if we want to look at it.

Grizedale says "[js] Grizedale" on its tooltip and gives a 404 error. I have loads of Grizedale GPXs but none of them follow the entire NFT...

All the functionality on the site that you can access now will remain completely free, so don't worry, anything you upload will still be fully available.

There is some extended functionality that offers some garmin connect type features that I may charge a small subscription for, but that is a way off at the moment and won't effect what is currently there!

Just out of interest which browser are you using? I'm not getting that tooltip on Firefox or IE? Maybe I'm missing something?

If you have some good Grizedale GPX's please feel free to upload them via the Routes page. They don't have to be a waymarked trail to be included. There is an upload link to the right hand side of the search bar.

Hi Just Go Ride

I will have a go at mapping Gisburn forest using an app on my iphone which is usually pretty reliable. not sure how to send it as a gpx file though so may need some advice.

That would be great. Which iPhone app are you using? I'll download it and have a look at how it works. Once you have recorded your route get in touch and I'll sort it out for you!

Good looking site.

would be nice on the trail centre page to indicate which ones you have the routes for.

Also a map of uploaded routes like the trail centre map would be good.

I have been thinking that myself about providing as indication of which trails have associated routes. I might stick an icon next the ones that do. I'll get onto that when I get back from Wales.

A lot of people have suggested a route map, I think that its a good idea. I just need to find a nice clean way of doing it. I think some times that to many waymarkers on a google map can get messy. I might look into some regional clustering.

i know its complicated but it would be cool to see who uploaded tracks and then be able to rate/comment on A) the individual GPS track and B) the person uploading. Thus people would take some effort over their GPS uploads and hopefuly make the effort to correct them with software if they arent quite perfect.

I've used RunKeeper, it exports to gpx once you've uploaded it from you iPhone to the RunKeeper site. It should be easy enough to sort out 😉

I've now added Lee/Cragg Quarry and Bedgebury as well as splitting Whinlatter from Grizedale (twas the way on the FC site?!?).

I'll get the date uploaded and some sort of icon to indicated that the trail is available in route view asap. I'm working on it at the momment so shouldn't be much longer.

I'll also get the other suggestions added as soon as i can.

You can already leave a review for a route/trail, although I see where you are coming from. I check all of the trail centre trails so they should be relatively accurate but uploaded routes are another matter. I'll have a think about the best way to deal with it.

In response to this and a few other similar requests I've now added OS maps to the site to enable route nav sans GPS..

No probs, I'm just wading through all the suggestions and trying to incorporate as many into the site as is feasible!

The OS idea was always a good one and I had the code for it already so it was an easy win!

Yeah, thats would be great. RunKeeper should have uploaded it to their website. You should be able to log in and export it as a GPX file. You can then log in the JustGoRide and upload the GPX file on the Routes Page.

Alternatively you can email it to me and i'll get it uploaded! 🙂

Thanks

Nice one.. So looking at Gisburn Forest.. is this the official website?

http://adrenaline-gateway.co.uk/gisburnforest.aspx

If so it looks like its a fully waymarked trail and I need to get it on the map! I don't suppose you have the blue trail as well do you?

Either way I'll get Gisburn added to the Trail Centre page asap

Thanks

no i don't think it is the official website and the trail map on this site is a couple of years old with old routes and a projection of future routes.

i managed to find the following information which will help you add Gisburn to the trail centre page

http://www.gisburnforestmtb.co.uk/

There is an upto date map on these pages (apart from a small new section) which also has the blue route on which i didn't map.

My route of Gisburn is slightly shorter than the official route as i take an unofficial trail through the forest to cut out a long length of "boring" fire road but last time i was there i noticed signs of trail building through this section so the route is probably going to end up going that way.

Jim's route is probably correct. We are bypassing the long boring fireroad section, hopefully the new section will be open early next year if not before. There is a better route map here

The routes are fully waymarked and there are plans to upgrade the carpark and add toilets. No specific plans for a tail head cafe yet but there is a great mountain biking pub with cafe, bike wash etc. just off the trails halway around (Dog & Partridge at Tosside).

Chopwell woods - North East England
Craik Forest - Scottish borders

Both FC owned but with marked out graded bike runs on them, but not a trail centre.

Sure, I need as much info on them as possible though. I have just had a quick googling session but there seems to be limited info. A great reason to add them to the site really, but I need to know what trails are in each location, each trail distance, grading, brief description, etc..

If you know these drop me an email and I'll get them added!

The initial map was compiled using the FC website as a reference..

http://www.forestry.gov.uk/england-cycling

These less well advertised trails are harder to get info on unfortunately.
