Not sure how to feel about this, I can't imagine they'll mess with a winning formula too much, but I've always resented SRAM aftermarket spares prices, and sadly Time cleats do seem to wear out quite fast...
Brace yourselves knees, we might be going back to Shimano...
Thought this would be about them sticking out a 10-53 cassette to keep us from defecting to Shimano.
It was an improvement to Rockshox when SRAM bought them.
Likewise Avid
You can prise my Time RXS pedals out of my cold dead hands.
Shockwiz might not exist to the extent it does if they hadn’t bought the company either.
Likewise Avid
It was more that they bought Avid, then they went downhill to the point they dropped the name and rebranded them as SRAM.
Googling suggests they bought Avid in 2004, and the Juicy was released in 2007.
Having said that, before the Juicy you had a choice between Shimano XT 4 pots (expensive and heavy), hope (expensive), or Hayes HFX (heavy). At least SRAM were making a light-ish brake at a decent price. Just a shame they lasted a single decent before the master cylinders started leaking.
It was an improvement to Rockshox when SRAM bought them.
Very, very fair point actually, I never even rode Rockshox until SRAM bought them after which I never road anything else.
Will reserve judgement until/if cleats go up to £40/set...
Was just about to buy as set of Time Pedals after going through everything else since. Just the hurry up I needed
Time cleats do seem to wear out quite fast…
Really? Mine seem to last forever. Been using Time for years and only had to replace a set of cleats once so far.
My biggest concern is whether the prices of pedals & spares will go up significantly and bearing quality will be kept up.
As Sram ditched their power metre pedals mere weeks ago, have to wonder if there is a connection. Time power meter pedals?
This is A Good Thing!
Will make it easier for me to continue my quasi-religious devotion to ATAC pedals!
ATAC metal cleats last an age, I've still got some borderline useable ones on my old road shoes from 2006, albeit I did far less cycling besides commutes back then after my lower back went twang.
The plastic road cleats had a bad rep, the I-Clic/Xpresso(?) ones that came with my XPro10 pedals, despite being a better durability might well need replacing sometimes this year.
Been looking at Time pedals for a while. Not going to lie, this puts me off a bit. I don't associate Sram with quality. I guess they won't mess up Time pedal design immediately but still. Had everything from the diabolical Juicy brakes mentioned above to multiple carbon handlebars that aren't straight. Be interesting to see if prices go up, Time ain't cheap now.
Unsure how to feel about this having been a time devotee for over 20 years. Concerned that they are going to get new "features" that reduce compatibility and become disposable items.....
As for cleats, they wear in fast but wear out very slowly. Most of mine look shagged in a month and then work perfectly for the next 2 years.

They're not great, especially if you've ever used shimano.
Shimano (M540 level):
Cheap
Bearings last forever
Cleats last forever (steel), and work consistently as the releasing bits are all tucked away from the wearing out bits.
Mud clears just fine in reality despite supposedly being their drawback. Ice does build up, but rarely a UK problem.
Time:
Not Cheap
Bearings last some time, but not exceptional.
Cleats last a year of regular use (brass). But release too easily once worn.
Clear mud well, ice clears with a hard kick.
Crank Brothers:
Really not cheap.
Bearings last months.
Cleats last about as long as time.
Mud and ice are zero issue.
I did persist through a couple of sets of ATAC pedals, and four sets of CB pedals. Before biting the bullet and going cheap with Shimano. I don't recall ever wearing a shimano pedal out, and I've thrown out perfectly good cleats because the shoes they were on fell appart!
There's a different argument around float, but I much prefer the positive feeling of shimano Vs the slightly vague "return to center" sprung float of CB and time.
tinas, I don't know what you're doing with your cleats but I find that they last years of use. ie 10k miles +
Bearings last some time, but not exceptional.
I've got a pair of ATAC DH that are still in regular use which are well over ten years old. Bearings untouched.
I have a pair of XC8 on my gnarmac bike which are the most used pedals of mine at the moment, all weather use, all terrain. They're about six years old, again, bearings untouched.
Never even thought about servicing them. Never needed to.

Depends. Mileage, mud and grit, not everyone's feet stay straight through a pedal revolution. When I was singlespeeding I could wear out Shimano cleats in a couple of months. You can imagine that wasn't doing any good for my knees either.

They already did that.. upped eagle to 52t
excellent news, more reasons to not buy anything SRAM.
Will make it easier for me to continue my quasi-religious devotion to ATAC pedals!
That makes two of us in this particular cult @CaptainFlashheart.
TINAS what are you doing with your Time cleats? My ATAC 8's are on their first set and going well after 5000km.
Presumably lots of sram sponsored riders will be getting rid of their mallets
It's all good as far as I'm concerned.
SRAM stuff has done me well, very few complaints.
*waits for AXS electric release cleats*
Time pedals arent what they used to be. I’ve got a drawer full of carbons, XC8s, etc that all have bad bushings in them. Ive even tried replacing bushings with kits peaple say are compatible, but they always end up stiff and crap as the axles have worn with the bushings.
Yes they still rotate okay, but i can feel the side to side play, especially on the road/gravel bikes.
One of my sets of cleats is 15y old, but they're pretty goosed now.
My only experience of Time pedals was a set of Xpresso 2 pedals on my road bike. After about 18 months use the axle on one of the pedals snapped. It happened while I was stood up climbing and had me swerving across the road, before ending up on the ground - luckily no cars around at the time. I sent Time an email about the failure and got back a very poor response, which basically said we aren’t really interested, speak to your retailer they are your point of contact. Having subsequently looked online this seems to have been a occasionally reported failure. I put the remains of the pedals in the bin and have stuck with Shimano ever since. I can’t see me going back to Time even with SRAM’s involvement.
This makes me a bit nervous, as SRAM have a long track record of half-baked development.
If they don't mess with it, fine. If not, how hard is it to switch from TIME to Shimano pedals?
Holy thread resurrection!
I sent some failed Time pedals back to Merlin a while ago and never heard back. Emailed them 2 months later and it turns out they had refunded me due to lack of stock and I just hadn't noticed, oops!
Out on CX bike in the mud today and it reminded me why I liked Times so much, my new Look X-Tracks clogged a few times, not great.
Only place I could find Time ATACs was on ebay in some water damaged packaging! SRAM obviously not in a hurry to get their latest acquisition out onto the shelves...
I found it tricky trying to get new pedals fro my new bike. Ended up with XC6 from bikester. There really isn’t much choice out there
SRAM obviously not in a hurry to get their latest acquisition out onto the shelves…
Have you been living in a cave for the last 18 months?
Have you been living in a cave for the last 18 months?
😂
Fair point, I was basing that comment on a visit to my local shop whose shelves were groaning with stock of Look and Shimano pedals but who were moaning that they couldn't get Time any more, so didn't seem to be a Covid or Brexit thing.
Either way, I found some 'limited edition' Julien Absalon models in water damaged packaging on eBay, bargain! 😎
