Morning all,

Quick question for anyone who knows the above... Are the trails there easy to find and accessible on foot?

Slightly odd question, I know, but we're up in Shropshire for a couple of days next week considering possible relocation, and wanted to check out what would be the closest trails for me and my boys, but as we won't be able to take our bikes up this time, we're going to have to explore on foot!

Easy enough to find if you just wander around but they're not marked.

Local to Shrewsbury you've got Haughmond, Nesscliffe, Eastridge and the Mynd. There's a big local biking community here too.

plus Cannock at the end of the motorway, less than an hour's drive from Shrewsbury.

I've been doing loads of exploring on Trailforks! 🙂

I've ridden Cannock a couple of times before (going from Surrey to Manchester, it was a great way to break up a journey and avoid rush hours!), and also have my eyes on a few of the Welsh trail centres, but the nice thing about Uffington is (on the map at least) it looks like from some parts of Shrewsbury, it's easy to ride to for the kids without needing to drive?

As for that big local biking community, does it have a nice "middle-aged fat knacker" section? 😀

Yep, from Shrewsbury you should definitely just drive to Cannock Chase. Shropshire is rubbish.

Fear not, Shropshire residents! One of the key reasons for looking at Shropshire as a relocation destination is not having to drive significant distances to ride, so Cannock would not be a regular fixture.

All that stuff over the border in Snowdonia is very attractive though! 😀

Shropshire is the graveyard of careers.....

There's a reason Shrewsbury has 7+ bike shops

Fortunately I can now work from anywhere with decent broadband, and as I'll either be 49 or 56 when we move (if we can't do it the summer after next, kids' exams delay us for nine years. 🙁 ) this is the move for retirement as well, as I'm not going through that more than once more!

What Scruff says, and don't forget your permit!

I used to live 5 minutes ride from Uffington. In terms of sprog, you can get to the base of Haughmond Hill via a bridleway (I think?) from Uffington. Although getting to the top via that way involves a bit of a loop as it's the steepest side there. Or you can just hike-a-bike as Haughmond is not exactly a mountain! I wouldn't go there on a weekend but I went up there for the first time in around 15 years the other week and the 'freeride' area is still there.

You can also ride into Shrewsbury town center pretty well away from cars IIRC by following the river and / or an old canal route.

If you are going to Shrewsbury go to the Trailhead bike shop and ask for Sandy. I'm sure he'll give you the low down on all the current spots (Eastridge, Stiperstones, Long Mynd, etc) and tell him Will from Canada sent you 😀

The Shropshire Way runs from Shrewsbury out to Uffington and is used a lot by bikers. It's all off road. Haughmond Hill offers gentle accessible trails and pretty fun downhill-ish trails. I live on the Shropshire Way and am riding up there this morning to dig a new trail. It's a great little place to have on your doorstep.

Having moved away, went back to Haughmond Hill a few months ago for the first time in years. Apart from new car parking fees and the now official 'blue' trail I'm surprised not more trails have been cut off the ridge, unless I couldn't see them.
