I've got new bearings on the way for an Uberbike GXP BB. Uberbike say I need something like the hope BB tool to get the old bearings out, Facebook says I can tap them out easily with a socket.
Who's right?
Cheers
Both.
Depends if you're just replacing the bearings or the whole BB
Both
Cool, I’ll have a go with a socket and a gentle tap 🙂
@crazyjenkins01 just the bearings. Although I assume I’ll have to take the BB out to swap them over.
We have a set of bearing pullers with a sliding hammer, pulled them out very easy without removing the bottom bracket.
Hardest part was removing the GXP spacer without damaging it
Hope BB tools worked for me.
Easier to change the bearings with the BB out and watch out you don't damage the plastic ' 'top hats'
Just curious, did you order new top hats as well, my bearings are fine for now, but eventually I'll be doing the same job on my ht2 one.
@endomick yes I did. Well I thought I did. But having just checked the order I only ordered one 😂
Hopefully at least one of them is still good!
We reused the top hats on ours as they were still good.
Good to know Tracey 🙂
The one on my bike that went in the bin (in hindsight I probably should have kept it..) one of the top hats was snapped, one was fine.
Assuming the bearings arrive tomorrow I'll hopefully get them & chain ring swapped over 🙂
The hope tool isn't much more than a socket with benefits tbh.
We took a ceramic one of a bike we were selling and the bearings were spinning as good as it was when new 3 years earlier. Its on the shelf in the garage waiting for one of Abigales mates to come down and fit it to his bike or to pull the bearings out and put them in his.

Benefits make it very easy though.
Done.
Came out easily with a 21mm (?) and new ones back in with a bigger one.
I opened up the new ceramic bearings and pushed some extra grease in, hopefully will last a bit longer this time 🤞
