For the last 16 years or so I have been lucky enough to go on overseas long weekend biking trips each September. We generally have a great time on and off the bike (beers and food after the ride are as much a part of it as the quality of the riding). Financial/work change means this is no longer an option for me and so I am looking for an UK alternative? BPW and South Wales are great but they don't really tick the apres bike boxes. Where else should I look at?
For uplift not sure but otherwise I'd say the lakes
Back of Tescos in Swindon.
I’d vote for Betwsy Coed. antur stiniog downhill centre, Coed-y-Brenin, Marin trail very close. Snowdon for an early start or even Llandegla 45 mins away. And Betwsy hassome ok pubs and food places.
I have considered the back of Tescos in Swindon myself after reading good things about it on here a few months back ..but have heard recently that it's not riding too well due to trail erosion after its popularity increased due to said write up ..indeed there is talk of its imminent closure while the council undertake repairs ..is there a local trail building group at hand to ensure the special features are still maintained when this work is undertaken ?
Maybe go to a "fun" race / event with camping?
Bit of a change of pace from holiday trips and a nice social side, if you pick one that suits you?
Some date flexibility may be needed!
Define holiday feel
Different to normal days out, a break from work and family commitments etc. Unfortunately a large part of this is linked to big mountains, big sunshine and drinking and eating alfresco.
The air at Verbier, the light at Garda, the dust and smell in the Spanish Sierras...you know, different, special, holiday-y.
More about the people/attitude than the location IME. Self catering cottage/camping etc, fire up the bbq, crack open the beers, have a laugh
I would assume you would have to head to the highlands of scotland for the altitude and distance.
Depends where you are but I would say Peebles/Inners. Peebles if you want more apres-ride. The riding is second to none, the town is nice with plenty of options and it is of course overrun by cyclists. Which is nice.
Inners is cheaper and has better riding (on the doorstep - they're close enough to consider either as a perfectly good base for the other), but other than a couple of pubs and the best cafe, there's not much else.
Stay in/around Barmourh and ride around Cadar Idris & Pont Scethin.
peebles/inners get there and you won't need a car, so much like a continental holiday. everything is rideable. traffic free riding between the two towns. good food and cafes and most of all EWS standard trails and much more
Peebles is looking good...cheap flights too.
If your going to the hassle of flying somewhere, I’d fly somewhere good...
