I was recommended to get a Specialized Slaughter 2.3" x 29" as a rear tyre and a Maxxis Minion 2.4" (or thereabouts) x 29" as a front tyre.
However, it looks like there are multiple versions of each. The Slaughter is available as:-
Control 2Bliss Ready
Grid 2Bliss Ready
Grid 2Bliss Ready
Yes, that's two tyres with the same model name. One is heavier than the other, and I think they differ in compound (Gripton vs Centre60a/Shoulder50a).
The Minion range seems even more confusing, with options for front/rear, then different widths, compounds and casings etc.
I'm not sure which to buy, and I suspect that when I've decided it'll be easy to click on the wrong version when ordering. Does it just take a lot of research to decide which model to buy? The manufacturers don't appear to list comparisons between all variants within the same model range.
I think what you're seeing there is an older and newer model? I think the Gripton replaces the 60a/50a model.
Control is thinner side wall
Grid is the thicker with gripton being the newer 2018 compound of the same tyre. People are listing the old version as they still have stock. Honestly not noticed much difference myself so pick the cheapest.
I agree, although I find it fairly easy to choose what variant I want, trying to shop around for the best price is a real pain as often the only clue to the exact model of tyre, is the price.
Comp, Pro, brand names, variants with pro rider names that are different to others, various puncture protection options, tubeless and paper thin sidewall models...
