I have some none tubeless rims which i converted to tubeless with T-rex tape however now im wanting to run tubes again

With tubes the tyres dont mount straight anymore.

Could it be the tape? Doesnt seem to make much sense

Ive tried 2 different tyres and lubing it up which made no difference

Two options I’ve used successfully in the past are to pump the tyre up hard (60 psi or so) or put a very low pressure in and ridden up and down the street before inflating properly.

Option 1 above works for me but always keeping rim as far away as possible 🙂

Option 1 also here. I do add a little bit of washing up liquid to the rim and tyre and just seems to help it balance the tyre

a
deflate the tires and put
lots of liquid hand soap onto the rim

b

when getting higher and higher with the pressure:
you hear a "POP"!

c
deflate the pressure to the desired setting and everything is perfect.

I had the same, fine tubed just would not go on tubeless regardless of pressure and soap and of course each attempt to fix it was a faff due to the fluid initial inflation thing.

I think it may have been initially caused by tape that was too wide but now even with that problem solved it still wont go on straight.

TBH I have given up and resigned myself to new tyres when I get around to it.

@wilburt-bloke:

interesting stuff I learn here in the forum.
Great.
Didn't know that. Thanks.

O.k. - remember now an article from MAXXIS.

They claimed that the (some) sealant is very bad for their tires.
MAXXIS specifies certain sealants which don't weaken the tire...

Possible to that connected as well?

Some tyre and rim combinations can be problematic.

I had a nightmare time trying to get a pair of WTB Riddler 45c tyres seated correctly with on my Hope XC wheels (with tubes initially). In the end I had to get the LBS to have a go and they finally managed it with copious GT85 on the beads and a whooping 100psi (this got me rather worried about damaging the rims but Hope okayed this approach). I've since converted to tubeless.

Now that the tyres have been ridden they seat more easily (at around 60 psi tubeless) but still need lube on the beads in places.

GT85 works with tubes, but I wouldn't want it mixing in with tubeless sealant so soapy water is my approach here.

Don't rush it either; at 60psi I can watch as the bead at tight spots as it slowly creeps up the rim and finally seats with a satisfyingly loud pop.

I have this problem all the time - Road, mtb, mostly with tubes. Annoys the shit out of me and haven't found a reliable solution.

You can try running a tyre lever all the way around the bead, lifting it without removing the tyre. Tyre lever at 90 degrees to the rim, do both sides. My WTB Nanos sat better doing this

strange.

Rim tape stays where it should stay?
The liquid hand soap thing plus going really high up with pressure once solved the problems I had.

Never went through this procedure:

none tubeless rims which i converted to tubeless with T-rex tape however now im wanting to run tubes again

Others had problems with this as well.

But

Road, mtb, mostly with tubes

strange.

Rim tape moves around and prevents the tire from seating correctly?

After experiencing a Badger-like scenario I never ever inflate tyres for the first time indoors. I value my hearing too much.

Soapy water, lots of pressure and a satisfying POP!. However, nigh on impossible to get my Schwalbe tyres and WTB i25 rims to separate, the bead seams bond into the rim. Good in some ways, but murder to repair a puncture ont on the trail.
I am a luddite using tubes stil... 🙁

Funny you say that seadog101, I was fitting Michelin Wild Rockr2 Tyres onto WTB i25 rims recently and they were the tightest tyres I have ever fitted. I was almost giving up they were that bad.

Haha. Great.
2018 will be better. Have to admit that it was very difficult to hear this night the famous "POP" of the tire.
Too much rockets around making noise. Sad that you missed the tire POP.
😥

@seadog101 and @dhrider:
WTB i25 rims

Mmmhh. Have on one bike the WTB i25 and use the WTB Vigilante.
Had to struggle and thought - hell a puncture in mud will be hell...
Filled sealant into the tubes - for safety...
But above: possible that these WTB i25 rims are strange in this way?
Even with WTB tires...?

@ dhrider and Andreasrhoen

Never had much trouble fitting the tires, no more difficult than any other rim/tyre combo. However, it seems that it's the Schwalbe ones that are hardest to remove. Once the bead is peeled away from the bead seat, again no more difficult than other rims.

I did try and go tubeless with the schwalbe/WTB combo, so maybe the sealant has had some effect. Going tubeless failed as the sidewalls of the non-tubeless schwalbes are too porous, the sealant was bubbling through the walls once I'd got them pumped up. 😡

I'll try again with proper tubeless tyres sometime.
