Looking for some advice, I am travelling over with a mate from Germany to do the Gralloch in mid-May. Any tips on tyres? I currently run 45mm Ramblers and he's on 45mm Cinturato Gravel Ms. Last May we did a 3 day tour of the Yorks Moors but I expect this to be very different. Any tips, I need to look at getting them ordered in the next week.
It's hard to say without knowing what you are comfortable on. Also see the thread about me not being able to ride fast downhill 😉
I did it on Gravel King SK+, the reinforced ones. You don't need much grip. A lot of it is rocky gravel and shouldn't get too muddy in the wet. There were a couple of muddy sections last year but they were short and it was ok on semi slicks and tyres with limited tread.
It is rocky, so tougher bigger volume tyres would help. The gravel is often big and chunky. Lots of punctures. I ran more pressure than I would normally. I went back later in the year to do the raider british champs and ran lower pressures and it nearly cost me the race and a wheel.
Out of our group we had all sorts. Tirreno dry, Specialised path finders, Schwalbe g-one RS. Nothing you would say was grippy.
Thanks, Jonba.
I'll look around what offers there are for tougher side wall semi slicks and go from there.
be better with a big knife. i cant see a tyre being much use to gut a deer
As Jonba says - mostly rocky with a couple of short muddy sections - last year was hot and dry (take two bottles minimum - DAMHIK 🙁 ....) and use the bottle drop off at the mid point feed. I rode on 45mm WTB's run tubeless which were probably overkill but I didn't puncture
