Following on from my other thread my mate has offered me his Ragley frame for a proper bargain price. Not strictly a DJ frame but it's pretty small and I'm pretty tall so works for me. Also the colour scheme means I can bolt on a lot of anodised tat I've accumulated over the years. Ordered some bits last night and with other stuff I have kicking around rough spec will be;

2013 Ragley Marley frame with Hope headset
Pros 2s on Flows
XT cranks with Hope BB, 34T ring (might go to 32 but had the 34 kicking around)
Velosolo spacer kit with 16T Surly sprocket
KMC half link chain
DMR Simple chain tensioner for the vertical dropouts
Nukeproof 45mm stem and 740 Azonic bars
XT rear brake with 160mm floating rotor

All in with tyres that will run me about £150. Love a bike build! However I have a set of old QR Toras kicking around but the spring is far too soft and the compression damping isn't working. Rather than bugger around with them I'm thinking of getting a set of the old model Pikes with 20mm axle, I still have the 20mm end caps for the Pro 2 kicking around somewhere

Two questions then; coil or air Pikes? Guess coil is more fit and forget once I have the right spring but air I can just pump up to suit. Don't know how easy getting springs will be now. Also much real difference between 409/426/454 for a DJ/park bike? I'm looking at something round the £75-£100 mark

Tyres - Schwalbe Table Top/ Maxxis Holy Roller/DMR something or what else? Guessing around 2.2" and don't want to pay more than £15 a tyre if I can help it

Ta!

These are pretty good-

https://winstanleysbikes.co.uk/kenda-k-rad-26-inch-wire-tyre?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIq7WAzMef4gIV7rztCh30CwT2EAQYASABEgJd4_D_BwE#26x2-3

but 32mm Pikes aren't. I'd maybe look for some 34mm X Fusion (Slant?) or Suntour (Aion or Auron) air forks instead, they can be had for not very much used if you check ebay and PB often. I've got basic (cos there's no need for a fancy damper on a DJ!) 100mm 34mm Aions on my DJ and they're smashing. They cost me £150, which is more than you wanted to pay I know, but they're miles better than old 32mm Pikes.

Cheers Kayla. I thought old Pikes were still well regarded, especially for something like a DJ? I always liked mine

I got an X-Fusion Slant and was pleasantly surprised by it. Much better than a creaky old Pike. It was less than 200 brand new when Upgrade were selling them off.

Bit of a curveball by my tyres are Specialized Rhythm Lite. They were buy one get one half price at the local Spesh dealer at the time. The DMR Moto is an old favourite and they're cheap on eBay.

Then just pump them all up rock hard so you bounce down the street.

EDIT:

I really liked my Pike at the time as well, but my old mate is still riding it and it feels awful. They're so small and flexy.

Can pikes be spacered down to 100mm travel?

Either way, argyle or circus forks, dth tyres

Pikes will be fine. Other forks may be better but Pikes will be fine. If you can find any at a decent price. I'd go air myself for the ease of setup and weight saving over coil.

Are you going to be running a front brake?

I have some Manitou Circus DJ forks here I'd be willing to part with pretty cheap.
(the only issue is one disc mount thread is damaged (could easily be helicoiled tho)

As for tyres. Depends what you're going to be riding most.
Pumptracks you want the fastest DJ tyres available (Halo twinrail are cheap and v fast rolling)
a mix of Dirt/MTB parks you may want slightly more grip in loose/intermediate conditions but still fast rolling like a DMR MOTO RT

I run the DMRs on my 4X bike and it's fine everywhere from pumptracks and BMX race tracks to mtb trails... including inners/golfie DH/Enduro tracks. Just don't expect good braking grip on steep wet trails.

I’m also looking for dj tyres, after researching the web I’ve settled on dth, they seem to be good for bmx tracks and dj

Ive got a pair of Manitou Mattocs, they can be spaced down to 100mm travel, and would make a great set of jump forks... Im only after 125 posted if youre interested?

Worth considering lockout on forks as well, if you're planning to mess about on a pump track being able to remove the bounce can make all the difference

On the fork front. Hard as **** is what you want. You want to be able to pump but just something to take the sting out of a rough landing or less than ideal run ups.

I had some air pikes on mine, travel changed down to 100mm by swapping the airshaft and had them pumped right up. They always seemed alright, I just ran the compression and rebound all the way on. I've also got 2 Maxxis DTH tyres and an Ikon sitting in the garage too if your interested

Thanks for the fork offers but collecting a pair of X Fusion Slants RL2 tomorrow. Need to reduce the travel but unsure whether to go 120mm or 100.

Ordered some Twin rails now but could return them I guess. How much for the DTH's strangey, also what size and condition?

Have a look on bike discount.de,I got a pair of Schwalbe tabletops with tan walls (and addix compound) for about ~£45 the pair I think. Was December though so price may have changed.

No worries. Some other dude is interested in the Manitous too. 😉

As for 100mm vs 120mm. go with what gives you your prefered HA, bar and BB height rather than worry about travel. You're going to be running them oversprung anyway.
Don't take the advice above to just turn up rebound and comp to full though. Run normal speed rebound and only use comp if needed. Just because your riding 4X/BMX tracks, skateparks and pumptracks doesn't mean you want a completely dead feeling suspension fork. just firmer. Don't be afraid to run it so stiff you never bottom it out to get the correct support/pop.

Twin rails are super fast and nicely grippy on asphalt pumptracks and skate parks and fine at dirt DJs BMX tracks. Don't worry too much grip wise over DTHs. You're going to be running them at 60psi anyway.
a summer of riding it could just make a man out of a STWer 😉

Ps. we need pics of this frankenDJbike when it's built

The DTH's are the 26x2.3 wire bead versions in good condition, can send some pictures if you'd like. £25 for the pair?

Cheers strangey - the Halos have only cost £40 though so not worth the effort sending back etc so will pass

geex - pretty much confirms what I was thinking re: fork length (mildly annoying as it is when you're right...) so will be going 120.

This is still STW by the way - I'll no doubt ride it twice, decide it's too scary and my knees hurt too much and then mutter vaguely about loving it but life getting in the way etc when anyone asks before quietly stripping it down to put some parts on a gravel bike in a couple of years.

Pics will be provided. Started building it last night but the first couple of threads on a gold Hope BB I had in the spares box are damaged and won't go in which is bloody annoying as it's ruining my Rasta ano plans!
