Looking at at practicing my skills going down the hill a bit faster over the winter days and nights.

I am happy to sacrific my climbing speed with narrow tyres to gain more confidence and grip when descending.

What is a good starter ? Im slightly confused when searching as to fatter at front and skin rear etc?

Looking at glentress natural and purpose built ttrails, Innerleithen and other natural trails in the Borders area.

Cheers
Sam

PS current tyres i have in shed some bought some given from friends.......2.5 / 2.25 / 2.1 x 3 oh and my 1.5's but they are special!!

How wide are your rims? Some tyres don't feel as nice if the rims are too narrow.

Just to confuse the issue, but tread patterns, compounds, tyre profile and carcass construction are all important too when you're looking for a tyre you can have confidence in.

Oh, and different Manufacturers size their tyres differently, so one company's 2.2" might be bigger than a 2.35" from another company! Or in the case of Conti and Maxxis, they're not even consistent within their own range!

Anyway... As you were... Sorry for the extra confusion! 😉

there is a lot more to a tyres grip than just width. what tyres are they?

widest tyre in the dry would *normally* be the most grippy. in mud and in the wet this can all go backwards.

Pressures make a whole load of difference.

But to be honest if you want to improve your skills dont worry about what tyres you use. The skills you learn will be about line choice, braking sensitivity, positioning, anticipation, weighting/unweighting etc etc.

All of that can be learned on any tyre.

Now you have opened a can of worms with a question on tyres 🙂
