As question above on my hardtail i would prefer to put bigger on rear but await the STW wisdom
bigger front, welcome to mtbing
front. gives more grip for steering which is what's important. you'll have to live with a *bumpier than a 2.3 tyre* rear end.
fatter tyre on front is the way to go...

i use a bigger rear on my hardtail, it's a bit comfier.
of course, i may die any day now.
(2.4" advantage rear, 2.3" high roller front = a recipe for death!)
I have a lot of friends who ride with the bigger in the rear... I guess it might have something to do with motocross / trial background, but it's hard to argue with them when they ride so much better then me. 😀
But I run a bigger in the front (or same size to save myself from the argument).
