Been running Maxis Minions F/R adding Ardent rear for summer use although there looks like a lot of life left all the blocks have rounded also just had the suspension serviced so thinking i may benefit from new rubber.
My riding consists of fast single track and climbs including annual trips to the Alps but not full on D/H, I was thinking of using wider Tyre up front if there are any real benefits? something along the lines 2.1 rear 2.4 +

My unfashionably sized 26" 160mm bike gets minion dhf 2.5 exo super tacky on the front and 2.4 ardent on the back. Sounds like your on the same page, I sometimes put a 2.5 minion dhf dual ply on the back for uplift and dh Alps trips but generally I find the minion/ardent combo a good one for everything.
yeh mines the same 160 out of fashion but it works well for me and having just shelled out for F & R suspension tunes thats how it will stay for for another few years, ditton on the lifts in the Alps stick to the reds for me but i still want the bike to work well.
Looks like that may be the best combo set up with the Minions and Ardent but i think I will increase the width size on both.

2.4 is not plus is it? Not many 26" plus tyre options, Surly Dirt Wizard 2.75 and that is about it isn't it?

Yeah. WTB have been showing some 26x3.0 tyres, and apparently some 26x2.8s that I can't find photos of, but not much else yet. Vee Rubber have been all over other odd tyre sizes more quickly than most, so I hope they mess about with 26+ too.
It's frusratingly little studied, but an old study that (probably) led Schwalbe toward the ideas they put into Procore showed lower tyre pressures reduced rolling resistance (they only studied down to about 20PSI though). Given what I've heard from people riding plus tyres in most conditions (skating over slick mud being an exception), and seeing a friend suddenly get much faster on descents with plus tyres on a Cotic Soul, I suspect good 26+ options in 27.5 frames will be a real sweet spot for many riders.
I can just about fit a 2.8 into my 26" frame which is why I am interested in more options as found a nice difference when going to 2.4 (cornering speed, confidence on tricky sections and comfort as riding rigid)
I would try the Dirt Wizards but £124 for a pair of tyres is too much.
Kerley, I bought a DW for the front of a rigid bike. put it on the Crest that I had already, and I was disappointed to find it was barely any bigger than the 2.4 XKing I had on there before. Wide rims will make more difference. Not a cheap option, but gives your more volume and a wide variety of 2.35/2.4 tyres which will come up big on something like a dually or a hugo, or a £50 trials.

Already have some fairly wide rims 30mm internal width and using a 2.4 Mountain King which does look pretty big but was after something as big as I could get that would fit in rear of frame which is around a true 2.8.
If the Dirt Wizard sizing is not true and the 2.75 is really 2.4 then I will forget all about those
it's a 2.75 on a 45mm rim, but then so is a 2.4 King! DW is designed to be that shape, though, so will have a "better" profile.
I've been doing some measuring and the biggest differences between the X King and the Dirt Wizard are the cost, the tread pattern and the weight. Volume, not so much...All measurements round the casing with digital calipers, circumference rim hook to hook with thread and tape measure.
Front "2.75" Dirt Wizard on Crest. 20 psi
Width (digital calipers) - 2.35 in
height from rim hook (d.c.) - 2.05 in
circumference (thread and tape measure) - 6.5 inRear "2.4" X-King on Crest 20 psi
Width - 2.33 in
height from rim hook - 1.91 in
circumference - 6.25 inDirt Wizard is 850g in the light weight version and costs £65
X King is 560g in light weight version, costs £35
Admittedly the tread is chunkier and is going to take a lot of that extra weight.A 39 mm (internal) Velocity Dually is 610g
21mm internal Crest is 340gSo you may as well get a wide rim and whatever tyre you fancy, but don't think the Dirt Wizard is THE way to go for an extra volume. I did see a chap running the 2.4in X-kings on Duallys and they looked pretty substantial!
