As per pic. Currently a 700c x 35. Wondering if I can squeeze a 700c x 38 in here.

Not sure how much volume the 38 would have or if that starts to get into dodgy territory for clearance.

Thoughts?

38s are fine on mine (although I swapped the stock fork for a carbon one so not really much help!) Not really enough room for guards though as well.

Well I have some 35 marathon racers on mine with loads of clearance and guards and am about to see if 40's without guards will fit. Looks to be room and it won't be going anywhere muddy so I'm hoping it's ok. Got a mixed ride coming up that I'd just take my rigid mountain bike on but 2 of the others are on e-bikes and the other on a hybrid so 2.6/2.4 might be hard work

I am pretty sure my friend has 36c Continental Cross King in there - the knobbles come up big it seems.

Had 38mm GK SKs on my 2013(ish) CdF with no issues. Well, couldn't fit mudguards but no issues other than that.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. Good to know the 38mm worked out. This is a 2013 model, so should be a similar experience.

I'll probably give it a shot, and if so, I'll post a comparison for future reference.

Always hard to judge clearance from a picture. Have you measured the clearance precisely? I normally find the largest allen key I can fit in the tightest gaps. If you currently have min 6mm clearance at the sides, and 4 or 5mm at the top, a 38mm should go

The newer CDF's have much more clearance (I had 43mm GKs in mine years back with clearance to spare), so be wary of extrapolating from tyre clearance on those

Thanks, yes appreciate it's a bit tricky from this single pic. Useful info there.

It's mostly this crown area that is the deciding factor, where it drops a bit lower. I measure about 7mm above and plenty more at the sides (enough not to worry about specifics).

Ah, in that case you may even manage a 40mm. You're unlikely to get a massive vertical wobble in your wheel so 3-4mm clearance there will prob be fine, unless it's super muddy

I don't know why they made the forks on the early CDF's so short

38c GK SK on a 2018, but I wouldn't try 40c

I managed 40mm WTB Nano on my 2018 for the dirty reiver one year. Guards wouldn't fit and the front mech on the tiagra groupset would rub when in the big ring (unless you adjusted it to just be a fraction out of alignment). Normally have 35mm Gravel king with guards. Tempted to go up to 38mm.

I had 40mm tyres in my 2015 CdF, fine in the front but too tight in the rear - they rubbed when the stays flexed (which was often). I had no chance at getting guards on with them though.

I can get 40mm on the front with full guards, 38 on the rear. 2015 CdF.

I don’t know why they made the forks on the early CDF’s so short

1st CdF had carbon CX forks, stock length. Then in yr 2 it got steel forks but the upgrade/option for the carbon fork was seen as important so the steel fork gave up a bit of tyre clearance due to crown depth, to match the carbon fork length. That was 2010 when 35mm was the max. In hindsight .. longer steel forks from the start might have been better.

Interesting backstory there. Yes, always thought the tight fit was a hangover from CX, pre "gravel" days.

So here's the follow-up. Turns out that 38mm is fine. Happy with that result.
