Ok guys, after a bit of tyre advice. I've just ordered a hardtail and I can choose which tyres it has. I'm thinking Maxxis minion up front, but not sure about rear. The choice is Maxxis Ardent, Shorty, Minion, High Roller 2 or Ardent.
Minion
Currently running Hutchinson Toro on front and rear on Sherpa, they are excellent!
Great traction in the corners and under braking, also very fast with no drag, and super cheap from Acycles at the moment.
I too would say minnion or high roller 2..... But having just done a weekends riding on a HR 2 as a new tyre to me, I think I would prefer less of the sliding out of the rear end.
If you can have one, get DHR2 Minion. If not just a normal minion. Also try and get 3c on the front, 60a rear and maybe EXO too 😉
Depends what you are riding. If it is more muddy HR2, less mud minion. If you want faster rolling ardent.
I can mix and match. Trails around here can be sloppy when wet, and there is also root and rock
Forget shorty from your list- awesome tyre, just doesn't make any sense at all behind a minion. Other'n that- how fast do you want it to be? Minion, hr2, ardent, in that order.
Doesn't have to be a Minion up front
I'd take the Minion and Hr2 combo. Do it all tyres for just about any conditions.
Bemused that no one rates the Ardent as a rear tyre. It's fantastic imo (of course). Rolls much better than a Minion or HR and is pretty much as good in mud, ie not great. Surprising grip on technical climbs.
The 2.25 sizes up just right as a good balance between rolling speed and grip. Better manners on the limit too. It's my go to rear tyre for everything except full on winter slop and I've spent plenty of years on the other Maxxis offerings to compare.

Always found HR's to be pretty decent in the mud. Haven't spent much time on an ardent, so can't compare.
+1 for everything jimjam said about the ardent, it's my go-to rear tyre as well, I run the standard on my soul and exo on my spitfire. Rolls really well and has far more grip than it looks. Needs running on a wide rim though to get the best out of it, anything less than 21mm and it is very pinched and makes the transition between centre and edge very noticeable.

Yes well back in the day (sorry, I know, sorry) it was always a good go to tyre for all round riding when you wanted something that rolled ok with predictable cornering and didn't want to run a spike. Now though we're a bit spoiled for for tyres that fit that bill but do everything better. WTB Vigilante springs to mind as a perfect substitute for the HR but it rolls faster, higher volume, and far better mud performance. Muddy Marys and others, too. Maxxis are hard to beat for durability and predictability but they don't tick every box on the wish list.

Op doesn't have the choice apart from Maxxis. I'd like to try an ardent, but I can't imagine it has the outright grip of a HR/HR2. Then again, as I've only ridden it on a friends bike I cannot say.
It's all priorities at the end of the day. From being a huge tyre whore I have gone back to one set of tyres for the whole year.
<recommends something else>
I liked the Ardent on the back til I got a Captain- rolls about the same, fair bit more grip, and much better in mud. Probably not as tough, doesn't cause me any bother though. Not sure they got the edges right on the ardent tbh
The choice is Maxxis Ardent, Shorty, Minion, High Roller 2 or Ardent.
Ok. Cheers for the advice Guys.
