Hi there,
I'm new here, so be nice!

I'm currently riding a 5 year old Boardman Road and after a couple of years of fairly light use I'm going through a bit of a love affair and riding most days.

During the week I commute (road quality variable), I also go out at weekends and do mostly road but some light off road, gravel, tow paths, easy woodland etc.

Coming up to winter I've made the decision to get disc frame with clearance for wider tyres in order that I have more grip and more stopping power.

I'm building the new one next week (Crosslight Pro 6 F&F, TRP Spyres, and MT55 wheels)

But I'm stuck.

What tyres do I go for?
I'm big (6'5" 16 stone) and ride fairly fast on the road.
I'm used to 23mm.

I know wider will be more comfortable over the bumps and offer lower rolling resistance than narrow(for same psi).
I'm probably going to go for Marathon Plus.

But how wide?

28?
32?
38!?!

I'm 6'4 and 15 stone and I found 35s very comfy for lejog. The guy I did it with ran 28s and he'd need be be going over 20 before his tyres rolled any faster.

I have no idea how you got 23s to an adequate pressure. What were you running 200psi?

Perfect - just the sort of advice I was looking for!

Any experience with the Marathons (or other tyres?)

I used marathon supremes. No punctures in 1500+ miles. I did 100 miles+ off offroad on them too. Pressures came in at 55 front, 70 rear with 14lb of kit onboard.

No tank slapper problems, unlike the oem 28s, but that wasn't necessarily the tyres fault.

Err... I think that covers it.
