The twist grip on my son's bike has got very stiff, to the point where he can not really use it. Changed cable and improved things a bit but still hard work. Is this just how these things age or can I fix this somehow?

Squirt through with GT85, did you change the cable outer too? Checked cable line and mch is moving freely etc?

Sram used to recommend not using anything other than a silicone based grease(Jonnisnot was their official brand), other types of lube can sometimes cause the plastics to swell and bind. +1 for new cable outers too.

is everything lined up ok (ie not pulling round tight corners etc)

an old motorbike tip was to get cable end to highpoint (with inner still inside), make a plasticine (etc)funnel at top of outer cable, fill with light oil etc and leave for it to soak down entire cable overnight
