You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
i purchased one of these a month ago new from merlins and since new it has had some stiction on the intial stroke of the rear suspension.
i thought this would disappear with riding. It has been ridden 4 -5 times a week and the stiction is still there! is this normal or am i missing something.
I have checked all the linkage bolts with a torque wrench but this has had no effect.
Only when i lift the rear of the bike the swingarm returns to the start of its travel(final 5mm or so)
any ideas??
Have you re-greaased all the ports at all and seen what happens then? Maybe one of them is a bit dry and so needs some attention. Mine doesn't do any of what you mention though. VPP bikes need their bearings in perfect condition as otherwise that system doesn't work as I found that out on my Intense 5.5. I'd definitely check the ports out and pump some nice fresh grease into them.
Something waaay wrong here.
When you lift the bike, the suspension then extends the last 5mm?
Assuming that you don't have a 50kg seat on the bike, then this shouldn't happen.
The downward pressure from weight of bike alone should NOT move the shock at all. Weight of the bike alone is negligible compared to force off shock trying to extend.
Take the shock out of the bike.
Cycle the frames suspension through its full range.
There should be about 50mm+ of movement between the shock mounts.
This movement may have a little stiction- a little is fine.
A lot- there is a problem.
If the above reveals a lot of stiction- strip and regrease all pivots (very easy)
Then move onto the shock-
Let all of the air out.
Re-fit it.
Cycle the suspension as before.
Check for about 50mm of travel at the shock.
Pump shock up to give 25-30% sag with you on it.
Where abouts do you live?
DW Turners take a while to loosen up fully, but shouldn't be behaving as you describe :-/
I'm guessing this will be a shock problem.
hadge,
i have regreased all the pivot points as you have mentioned. Some took some grease others seamed to be full when i tried to regrease them. According to the Turner website if they are already grease they won't accept anymore . Is that correct?
Stanley,
regards the suspension extending the last 5mm, if i cycle the rear suspension and take my weight off the bike as i lift the rear end it extends to full stroke.
I was going to release the shock this evening and cycle the suspension , i'll report back .
Of the two people I know who either have had or still have a DW link 5-Spot, both frames have massive amounts of stiction. Both have had their frames stripped down with the shock removed at various times and both frames have needed a fairly hefty push to get the rear ends moving in that guise.
So I guess this is perfectly normal.
Personally it doesn't seem right to me but I'm not an engineer and I don't own one so it doesn't really bother me and it doesn't seem to both my mate who still has his and rides it pretty quickly.
These DW-Turners do take a bit of bedding in. My 5-Spot is now super plush but has had several months of use. With the shock out, the suspension extends as I pick the bike up. Didn't used to do that, from new it would have needed a helping shove!
But whereas most bearing equipped designs would now be ready for a rebuild (imho of mainly Peak riding), my Spot is now perfect 🙂
My Flux feels a bit tighter though, but it's early days!
TBH- the difference between new and fully bedded in pivots isn't "that" noticeable when riding. 80kg battling a shock full of compressed air? The pivots would have to be ludicrously tight to have a big effect.
To be honest that sounds like a rear shock problem, like the others have said, disconnect the shock and pull things up and down to see what happens
Silly question.. you've not got the compression damping screwed right up.. assuming you're shock has that!
right i've found the culprit.
i release the rear shock and then systematically loosened each linkage bolt and have found that the rear DW bolt/pivot is whats causing the problem. As soon as its loosened everything is lovely and smooth.
When re torqued the problem reappears. I have tried to regrease this pivot but it seems full. So i shall strip it this week and see what happens.
cheers guys
Never thought about these before- is a large still nimble/non-XC for a 6ft1 rider?
Looks very similar length etc wise to my old Blur4x.
6ft on a large here. Should be fine for you Hora, I thought the spots were a bit longer (CS and TT) than the 4X. They need 160mm forks though IMO.
Effective tube tube looks the same (although I'd happily have a 1/4 inch etc on the Blur4x's TT.

I looked at the mtbr reviews and alot of the riders are on 36's! 8)
I reckon you'd need a 70mm stem. I'm on 36 floats, in the market for a coil shock though.
I'd aim to use my 50mm stem 8)
Heard problems like this with riders under 5ft tall.........
