The dismal weather of late has had me heading back towards zwift. I have nice tyres on my bike at the moment and don't want them ruined. But turbo tyres seem quite pricey and I may want to take the road bike out (you know, on the road) on a nice day, but probably not too often. Not sure i want to go the whole faff of having a separate wheel so i'm wondering what others do?
I've been using the stock Espoir puncture-proof commuting tyres that came with my Specialized Allez.
Seem to work fine on rollers, on Turbo, and surprisingly well on the actual road. I think the biggest problem is that the turbo accelerates wear of the tyre due to heat build up?
The Halfords one is only £6.
I trashed a cheap road tyre that I fitted. It got too hot and delaminated. Then went bang.
There is a lot less drift from the trainer tyre too.

Ah... interesting! I think I was getting quite a lot of drift, e.g. later intervals would often seem easier. Just put it down to me having warmed up and maybe thermal drift in the fluid of my trainer (although manufacturer claims no drift).
I originally used a cheap road tyre, lasted ok but when it wore out I tried a different cheap road tyre and that near melted after just a few rides. The proper turbo tyre I then put on has lasted about 5 years of 3-4 hours a week at least and still going strong.
I've used both, the turbo tyre is a touch quieter and a bit more consistent. More importantly, it means I'm not wearing out my good road tyres on the turbo.
£14 from Halfords, it works fine for me. https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/bike-tyres/halfords-essential-turbo-trainer-tyre-700x23-119333.html
I picked up an old knackered wheel from a mate and trued it up to use as my turbo wheel. I used old worn road tyres on it, but would have eventually gone for a turbo tyre.
Don't ride a turbo tyre outside if its wet.
Just use an old road tyre, just not one with cut in it or they'll puncture the tube even on the turbo!
Turbo tyre is the right tool for the job - it still sheds rubber, though I do give mine a bit of work. Pick one up when they are on offer.
