So I picked up the Halfords turbo and gave it a whirl with my standard tyres, all fine but the tyres are practically brand new 28s that came on the bike so rather than 'burn through' the rubber I decided to pick up a turbo tyre from halfords but in 23. Now due to, I guess the profile difference, the turbo doesnt clamp on to the wheel in the normal 700c setting. I've adjusted it to the 26" setting instead and now its touching the tyre even before I clamp down on the rubber so the tiny catch is really tiny. Should I go back to my original 28 and burn through it or try to find a bigger profile turbo tyre (i see specialized do varying sizes for £30) or just leave it as it is and it'll be fine?
Adjust it to somewhere between 700c and 26"
It's not like 700*28 is traditionally a 700c wheel used with a turbo

They are not turbo trainer tyres.
Does your turbo really only have 1 setting per wheel size? That doesn't seem right at all
It does look like it has 3 wheel size settings, plus a spring to take up a bit of slack for different tyre sizes.

Seems odd that it wouldn't work with a 23mm tyre, that would be a more common size to use on a turbo than 28. Possibly take it, and the bike into the shop and ask them.
it's the tacx T2240 so it has two settings according to wheels and then a locking mechanism to take up any slack. On the largest wheel setting the wheel and tyre doesn't touch the turbo at all whereas it did before but on the 26" setting the wheel touches the turbo mechanism when you try to insert the wheel/tyre without even taking any slack up. I can then barely take any slack up at all but I guess the turbo doesnt know about how much slack I've taken up it just cares about tyre contact really.
I wondered if due to the width of the rim (19.5mm internal) it makes the profile too low, I'm not sure the internal width of roadie wheels compared to mtb wheels.
The locking mech can be fine tuned by winding the blue dial. I'm running the same tire on some wide 700(29) mtb rims with the same turbo.
Yep I know it can, I've already had it upside down with the necessary 13mm spanner because I tried to tighten it so much in the 700c setting that it fell off the threaded bar which exists within the mechanism! Its backed off to the maximum now and barely clips in at all.
