Now that there seems to be stock available again I'm thinking about upgrding my trainer to a direct drive model.
Currently have the Kickr Snap and I'm looking at the Kickr Core.
I don't do Zwift as I really don't like it so it's usually used for TrainerRoad but I also plan on giving Sufferfest a try as I've not used it in a long time.
Is it worth the upgrade going from wheel on to direct drive?
Yup..
I went from a (I think) elite wheel on thing, to a tacx neo 2t.
To me, it's a night and day difference
-quieter
-smoother
-more accurate
-more realistic
-no slip
-MUCH better at keeping a power level compared to a wheel on (basically, it stays within power range +/-5watts even when changing cadence). very tight!
Yeah, it cost 4 times as much, but it IS better
DrP
I swapped my Tacx Flow smart for a Elite Direto a few months back. It is massively better.
Took me perhaps a week or so to get used to the different way the power was dealt with during workouts - the change to a short sprint interval in a workout for example.
But it's great! Wiggle were doing the Direto for £500 which seemed like a great deal.
just to echo the above, night and day difference. It's an upgrade that is worth it.
I have an Elite Zumo which is the cheapest direct drive you can get I believe
I also went from a wheel on trainer to an Elite Direto. A lot of money, but 100% worth it if you're keen on the turbo.
Sounds like it's a worthwhile then!
I'm guessing there isn't going to be much benefit of the full fat Kickr over the Core? From what I've read there's not much extra to justify the extra £300.
Word on the street is that the Saris H3 is a bit nicer to use in ERG mode compared to the other trainers in the same price bracket. I'm sure there's not much in it, but it might be worth having a look at prices and DC rainmaker reviews if that's your intended use.
yep.
I'm also looking to upgrade to a direct drive trainer from a wheel-on tacx.
I was looking at an Elite Direto and google throws up some attractive prices from EU retailers, but was not sure if they now incur imports costs.
Am I right in thinking the ship has sailed on using them as a way of keeping costs down?

I'm pretty sure it has.
I've just ordered mine, should be here in a couple of days 🙂
Wahoo have refurb Cores/ Kickrs in stock AND on sale at the moment I believe.👍
@poopscoop have you a link? Anything I can see on their website is out of stock?

Not certain on current stock levels as just remember getting an email from them a few days back mate. Perhaps the Core is oos as refurbished?
Oh, take a look at the new Jetblack trainer, very similar to the Core.
Reviewed by GP Llama on YT. It's gone up a £100 recently I think but cheaper than the Core still I believe.
Elite Suito-T any good? When looking into the Zumo there seems to be quite a few issues.

I got mine for £500 from Wiggle & it looks like they are still doing it at that price.
And there's a 0% finance option.
I read a few things about the Zumo being unreliable - and a mate had to send one back as it broke almost instantly.
I think the Diretto is meant to be decent and the Suito too.
I went with a Kickr Core to replace a Cyclops wheel on thing I was borrowing - the Core is pretty much the quietest trainer out there and I’ve been impressed so far.
I’m using it with Trainer road for now but when the weather gets biblical in the autumn I might try some Zwift races mid week rather than mud slogging twice a week.
Got mine from certini in Feb / March sort of time.

That looks pretty good - thanks for the pointer!
