hi
looking to pick up a turbo trainer to get/ keep fit winter evenings. my weekends are seriously busy after small child/ log business picking up over winter.
i recently bought a cotic escapade that I plan to sit on a turbo some winter evenings.
any suggestions as to what to look out for ref brands/ features etc?
I've just snapped up a Minoura B60-R on eBay for £43. I went after that particualar model after reading all the reviews I could find online, specifically looking for comments about noise (I'll be 'riding' in my kitchen). The Minoura seemed to be regarded as the quitest mag trainer, and things can apparantly be improved by using a dedicated turbo trainer tyre with a harder/quieter compound, also by placing insulation between the underside of the trainer and the floor. Someone on bikeradar said they'd had good results with Kingspan insulation from B&Q for about a fiver, so I'll be giving that a try.

Tacx bluematic here. Pretty basic but it works well, I've no reason to pay more. Far quieter than the mag cycleops I borrowed for a while, that really did make a racket. Not sure a turbo tyre makes it any quieter, the conti one I used didn't... I reckon if you're buying a tyre it makes sense but I'm using up old road tyres.
Turboing is shite btw. People try and hide this fact, don't believe them, it's exactly like biking with absolutely none of the good bits and tons of extra bad bits. If you don't hate it, you're a pervert. But it does the job.
I'd suggest a direct drive model, saves on peculiar tyre wear, much quiter and feels more "natural". I picked up an Elite Turbo Muin for about £300 which has been hammered for about 18 months now, far better than anything I'd used previously.

+1!
If money were no object, I'd go for one of those clever ones you can link to a PC and play Zwift or something like that.
bove, get a smart one like a Wahoo Kikckr and hook it up to Zwift. It is the only way of doing turbo anymore and relieves a large amount of boredom. Kept me riding all through last winter and dare I say I enjoyed it :s
Absolutely,at £949.99 a pop I will racing out to buy one. 🙄bove, get a smart one like a Wahoo Kikckr and hook it up to Zwift

eeeehhhhhh what did I ever do to you? I don't deserve you calling me a Pervert. Each to thier own brother - live and let live 😆 8) 😆
In other news I tried the BKool trainer at the Cycle Show (NEC last weekend) and it's kinda cool but also a bit 'isolationist' for my liking.
In other words it changes cycling from a healthy, social outdoor activity into a private but connected (via the internet) opportunity to compete with people you've never met 😯 😕
Get one that's compatible with Trainerroad, Elite Volare Mag is between £75-100, Halfords often have a deal on with a mat, riser block, etc.
Direct is all well and good but a cheapo spare wheel and trainer tyre is cheap enough.
I just use an old wheel, i.e. one that the rim has gone past the wear indicators, you aren't going to do any braking on a Turbo 🙄 Grab a turbo specific tyre and a spare block and you are ready to go.
I'm selling an Elite Real Axiom with loads of videos, online racing and training software if interested.
Consider rollers too. Less faff to set up and more engaging..
