Hi all
So I've been looking at utube about changing to tubeless on my fatbike and I have some questions
When using rim tape do you cover the entire inner surface of the wheel or do you leave the part where the tyre rim lips in clear.
Is it worth while to go over the rim tape with electrical tape ( I've managed to buy 38mm tesa tape and 50mm electrical for my 180mmm wheels)
Lastly do you or is it worth while to rub silicon grease on the tyre rim or wheel inner rim to aid the tyre to seat properly or does this effect the tubeless sealant....
Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated
Tia

I found that the pressures are so low that just taping over the holes with Stans yellow tape was enough.

And the tyre wall was so large that the force (psi x square inches) seated the tyre really easily.

Tubeless worked incredibly easily for me in the fatbike. I set it up initially with a Joe Blow Sport.

It really depends on your tyre and rim combination - some are really straightforward, others can be a complete mare. More often than not, the problem is down to too loose a tyre bead, so insert and inner tube, inflate the tyre to see how well it fits on the rim - break the bead, remove the inner and see if the other bead stays in place. If not you probably need more tape to pack out the rim. Using a webbing strap around the tyre can also help hold the beads in position during initial inflating - needs to be a strong strap with a metal buckle otherwise it'll snap. If it starts getting really tricky, then ghetto tubeless / split tube method is worth trying.

I see...my problem is I've only ever had vee hill billie tyres....put it this way when I get a puncture the tyre actually falls off the rim....im upgrading to minions very soon si I'm hoping these are a better fit
So none of you guys ever rub silicon grease or vase to help the tyres seat properly then

Just tape (gaffer or electrical) to cover the rim/spoke holes works fine for me. I have used washing up liquid to get on and seat really tight tyres, but not all require it.

One tip if you can’t get the tyre to seat tubeless is to fit it with a tube first and leave it overnight at the maximum pressure to stretch the tyre. Then remove the tube and it’s much easier to seat and seal it.

Another tip is to remove the valve core to get lots of air in quickly and of course use an Airshot type inflation system.

I find the biggest nuisance is getting the tubeless valve to seal work, it can take a bit of fettling.

But tubeless on fatties is brilliant. As long as I top up the liquid a couple of times a year I just don’t get punctures any more.

I wouldn't use vaseline, I would have thought anything oil-based would degrade the tire over time. A bit of fairy liquid will do the trick.

Unless you've got carbon rims you'll probably need something to pad the well of the rim out with to allow the tyre a fighting chance of inflating. A lot of people manage with pallet wrap, I found a couple of layers of bubble wrap worked, before that, I tried a strip cut from a yoga/camping/exercise mat and that works too but isn't as light.

I didn't specifically tape any of them, I just used a split 24" MTB tube over the colored rims strip. As long as there are no sharp edges left to poke a hole in it then it'll be fine.

Second the split 24” tube, strapping the tyre around its circumference and strip of foam mat tricks. I was ready to give up before I discovered these.

Split tube also worked for me (non fat).

Inflate it on the rim to ensure it's sitting correctly, that way you'll get a better chance of a central cut if there's no seam - obviously it won't stay inflated for long

Get yourself over to merlin cycles and order some 24 inch Schwalbe AV10 or SV10 innertubes to split , works a treat on my fat bike
https://www.merlincycles.com/schwalbe-sv10-av10-inner-tube-24-57993.html
just choose your valve type

AV10 is pretty much exactly the right width for an 80mm rim. You need to be a bit careful cutting them for that reason but they work great.
