For the second time today I’ve managed to blow a tyre off my rim pumping it up to pressure, making the cul-de-sac group chat in the process. Two different gauges both showing around 50psi as I’m transformed into a plasterers radio.

It’s a ‘ghetto’ setup, none tubeless tyres - WTB Horizon comp wire bead, rims - Alex DP23. Tubes removed, Stans tape, valves and sealant. Twice as the tyre has got up to pressure it has blown off the rim.

I’d love to set it up tubeless as it is as I really don’t want to spend any money on the bike (rigid Kona/knock about bike) but get the feeling I’m fighting a loosing battle.

Is the tyre shagged now or will I get away with reverting back to tubes? Anything else worth trying? Cheers.

50psi in a 47mm tyre? No wonder it blew off the rim! At that width surely they'd be better at 30-35psi or thereabouts.

Steel stretches so they're probably going to keep blowing off now.

Tubeless tyres... BUY SOME TUBELESS TYRES... Then try again!

The only ghetto methods that work were/are to do with the rims, and taping them to get a seal or running an inner tube slit down the middle. Non tubeless tyres don't work at all, they aren't tight enough on any rim, and they're not designed to be run without a tube in, so for the love of your eardrums, please don't try them again!

As above, you might get away with ghetto tubeless at MTB pressured, but at road pressures not a chance.

And chances are even slimmer if the tyre has already blown off once.

Happened to me the other week building up a new Specialized Diverge - £2.5k bike, rims were tubeless with tape installed - didn't check that they'd only fitted the entry level wired tyres. Inflated them to 45 psi, seated OK so installed sealant. Finished the rest of the bike, was removing the clingfilm wrap on the handlebars when the front decided it was time to 'go' covering me in sealant, as well as the workshop floor, wall and ceiling! It took longer to clean up the mess than build the bike.

Yeh as others have stated...non tubeless tyres tend to be too damn saggy. I know people have/will find a winning combination of rim/tyre in the past/future, but save yourself the hassle. It's just not worth it.

Last tyre it happened to me was a Maxxis exception (tubeless) in a newly decorated kitchen. As you say dovebiker it’s amazing how much coverage can be attained with 2oz of sealant.

Max tyre pressure is 70psi and was only going up to 55psi which had been fine with tubes in.

My only other attempt at a home made tubeless setup was years ago with the split tube method which worked well all subsequent tyre/rim combos have been tubeless.

Mboy, out of interest, how does a tube in the tyre inflated to 55psi stop the same tyre blowing off of the rim without the tube in at 50psi? Does the tube help to keep the bead seated?

Thing is, even if you get them to seal, chances are you’ll burp it on a corner. Possibly ruining your day.
When I’ve set up non tubeless combos on the past, first thing I did was try and unseat the bead with my hands or by pushing the tyre sideways against a wall. If it leaks I put a tube in.

Im running a steel beaded smart sam on the back of my cross bike, zero issues, but its 'only' 35mm and id not take it uoto 50psi!

Im concerned for your understanding of ks3 level physics.

Steel elongates accoring to Hooke's, and beyond its elastic limit will not return to its original dimensions.

Kevlar doesn't. Its modulus and yield strengths are about 10x higher than steel.

It's that or the OP has a ghost tyre capable of moving through the rim, which would be concerning for everyones understandings of physics.

Funny - I have run non tubeless tyres tubeless just using a rim tape with no issues

How's your hearing? Mine rang for a week when I blew a tyre off, though it was a 4" fatty.

Yes. The part of the tube that’s across the rim bed and tyre beads holds them in place. With a tubeless tyre the pressure across the rim does nothing to seat the tyre, it’s all reliant on the outward pressure that the carcass exerts on the bead.
