You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just bought some SH crests with stans yellow tape already on. Not run any wheels tubeless before, so what else do i need? Do i need one of the rim strips with valve attached or do i just need the valve, yellow tape ans some sealant? The tyres im using are tubeless ready.
How does the valve stay in place - do you just tighten the threaded ring onto the rim.
Hopefully, the only extra parts you need are a couple of valve stems and sealant.
I've got these on my Crests and they're perfect in 35mm:

Don't skimp on cheaper brands, or use an old tube - get Stans - simple.
Yep, the lockring is what ensures a good seal. Just needs to be done up really tight with your fingers.
Oh, and I use a dash of Stans sealant as well.
I'm doing fine with just the yellow tape, but that's with Continental UST tyres. Tubeless ready tyres are not quite so easy to install and seal, but you might be OK with just yellow tape. You need yellow tape even if you then use rubber rim strips. So try seating the tyre with just yellow tape, and if you're struggling even with a compressor, that might indicate that you need rubber strips (to pad out the rim circumference).
Tip - After first installing the yellow tape, run the tyres with tubes for a week to 'bed' the yellow tape in place.
You have everything part from the sealant. Just get a bottle of sealant.
Definitely will not need rubber strips, they are for bodging not tubeless rims.
With Stans and a tubeless ready tyre it will be as easy as installing a standard tyre and tube.
Probably one of the most useful things you could get is a friend who's done it themselves.
