I've been running my Rocket Rons tubeless but with some degree of scepticism as to whether they would actually do what they are supposed to. I have a set of road wheels which have some Almotions on and I run these with inner tubes based on the fact that I have witnessed several roadie mates having to call for a lift and go home on a road ride after their tubeless setup failed to do its job.
Today I got not one but two thorns in my front wheel. The first one I pulled out expecting to have to dismantle the wheel in order to repair but when I extracted the thorn there was a feint pfft and the tyre sealed itself. Marvellous! It was only when I got home and I was examining the tyre that I discovered a second thorn embedded. I removed that and the same thing happened - quick pfft and no air escape.
I am now utterly convinced that tubeless is well worth the effort. 🙂
Winner dude! 🤘
Last time I rode The Gap with a mate the council were 'pruning' the hedgerows along the roads back towards the canal. The roads were littered with off cuts. When we finished the ride we checked our tyres and had about 20 thorns in them between us but hadn't lost any air. We then sat outside the café in Talybont and pulled all the thorns out, expecting a few failures but every hole sealed straight away.
Tubeless is great! 🙂
Yep. I have recently found that it can also be almost as easy to set up as a tube. I put some new Rekons on Hunt V2s last month. They just went up within 2 or 3 pushes on the track pump. And zero fuss going on the rim. It was almost too easy. It quite literally took a matter of minutes to set up 2 wheels.
Why on earth would you prefer a tube I don't understand. I get 1 puncture a year as opposed to dozens.
So, now I need to repair the hole I guess - although no sign at all of any further air loss this morning. I have some mushroom plugs an I am assuming they stick on with glue just like a patch..
Are mushroom plugs the best option or will a straight forward patch do?
Any tips for success?
All I can see on Google is how to videos for car tyres…
You don't need to repair if they have sealed up. Use mushroom plugs if they won't seal or the hole is greater than 5mm, you push the mushroom through from the inside of the tyre (mushroom stem through to the outside, cap sitting inside the tyre and trim with sharp knife). It's a good idea to remove any thorns/sharps as one day you will have an issue where you need to put an inner tube in, then you want it free of thorns!!! Having tried various sealants I agree that Stans Sealant is by far the best.
If it was just a thorn leave the tyre as it is.
There's no need to do anything to it.
It's amazing the difference tubeless makes. Slight faffage when changing tires, but just the total lack of 'normal' punctures is quite revealing.
I've found that anchovies work really well too for something a little bigger.
Downside is still that when tubeless goes wrong, usually on a dark, cold wet night ride on your own, it really goes wrong!
Has this thread been resurrected from 2009 or something?! 😆

That is what I was thinking. Wait until you try disc brakes, your mind will be blown.
ive just tried a dropper post, unreal!
I leave the thorns in - natures own repair plug.
Although I have to admit, I did come unstuck once when I whammed a tube in and forgot to check for old ones still there. 🤦♂️
Yeah you don't need to repair a thorn hole. If it stays up, it's up, job done.
Sometimes you get holes too big to seal, that's what anchovies are for. Or you may need to patch from the inside if you get slashed.
All good then - even easier! Thanks for the advice 👍 This time last year when I was still using tubes I remember being out on a freezing day and getting two punctures. First one I just put a new tube in but it was still a right faff in the cold and e-bikes are a pain to tip upside down - largely in my case as the Bosch display sticks up from the middle of the bars so you have to move it (or try and support the bars some other way) so it’s not resting on it. I then got another one 10 mins later… Those days are gone now!!! 😎😎😎
I had Stans fluid in btw although someone told me that the MucOff one is the best..🤷♂️
Anyhow, it might seem like I’m being amazed by technology that’s been around for years but I only got a bike 2 years ago so it’s all new to me (despite being the oldest in my cycling group!). I am also impressed that it actually worked as like I said further up, I’ve seen several retirements where the tubeless failed to do it’s job, possibly due to the size of the hole I suppose - glass etc.
I can’t wait to try disc brakes…😉😂😂😂

I disagree.... leave the thorn in for the ride/if in the middle of nowhere, but try and remove when home. You will have to pop a tube in one day, and it will instantly puncture again because you all left the thorns in the tyre 😉 Assuming you know there is a thorn there! I would always remove when home.

Start a "which sealant?" thread... I bet everyone will agree on the same brand 😉
(but I do suspect Stans is the most popular, cos it just works)

Nah, you're alright. 😜😂😂😂😂
