Any issues with tubeless sealant when riding in temperatures below zero? Running Stans sealant and wondered how well does it seal a hole if the temperature were -4 degrees?
It still stays liquid at minus temps. I know that, but wouldn't know if it seals well at those temps. Or it does seal well and I haven't noticed it not sealing.
Dunno, can't say I've ever had to fix a non-sealing puncture in winter conditions and I've been tubeless for about 12 years
Stan's claims that it remains liquid and therefore effective down to temperatures of minus 28 degrees centigrade.
I don't think that sealing process requires any sort of chemical reaction, only the physical action of the latex particles of varying sizes plugging the the hole as in a bottleneck action. The water that the latex particles are suspended in later evaporates.
The Stans i've used freezes at about -15 ish, You can hear it crunching in the tyre.
It works at temperatures well below zero though (i've run stans through entire winters in Sweden before now).
I’ve used Orangeseal down to below -25C
You can hear it crunching in the tyre.
Are you sure it is the sealant that is making the crunching sound though? I would expect to possibly hear crunching sounds at very low temperatures even if using inner tubes.
I guess the easiest way to find out is to put a bottle of Stan's in a freezer for an hour. That will tell you if it freezes at -20.
Yeah, i *suspect* it's the sealant. You can hear stuff rattling around in the tyre too. Could be as the sealant is old, or there's extra water/moisture in there. The rattling goes away once the bike warms up.
TBH the bigger issue is all the lubricants and greases getting sticky.
I was out riding on Saturday afternoon and heard that crunching noise on my first descent. When I reached the bottom and shook the tyre, there was nothing rattling inside. I'm more or less convinced that it's the softer compound on the tyre studs that have hardened making the racket.
