Hi peeps,

Ive just built up my cotic bfe now its running Stansflow ex rims 2.35 with maxxis minions single ply tyres, i just bought these as they were cheap and risked it to try my new build out but ive been getting alot of flat tyres on the back, pinch flats from rocks and jumps, alot of people have told me to go tubeless, now ive neer tried tubeless ive always had tubes and never really had a puncture until this hardtail which is more common than a full sus as we know... now can i get a tubeless setup with these tyres or do i need some special tubeless tyres also ? thanks guys, reccomend me a setup for xc/am/dh and jumps thanks

Hi, you will need three things:

valves - other brands available

rim tape (yellow stuff also available from stans)

Sealant - a few different makes available

I only know all this as I am looking at doing the same thing, with the same rims. Apparently Maxxis tyres are fine to use - the gloop should help keep them sealed and I think only very thin, or very loose tyres cause major problems. Please note my above advice is based on internet reading, not any actual practical experience. ❗

Some good videos on stans website and generally helpful information about pressures, set up and which tyres work and which don't etc.

I run Flow EX's tubeless. The tyres should be fine. As above, you need valves, tape and spaff. I'd recommend using the 29mm tape from superstar as the 25mm isn't wide enough to seal the holes in the bead bench without adding an extra layer or patching up the holes with smaller bits of tape.

I've run single ply Minions on Flow rims in the past without any issues other than the sidewalls giving up their ghost, but that happens anyway.

Trambler was you ok with thw single ply minions then beacuse ive just rang my lbs, and they say its a gamble if they would work or not, because the single ply minions arnt a ust tyre but i can try it... either that or its 2 new tyres for tubeless setup :/ not really sure on what to do tbh or the best way to go about it

The rule I tend to use: If any part of your setup isn't tubeless ready then it will need to be set up ghetto style.

With the non tubeless tyres you may find it will burp easier and be harder to seal.

So if you want a more reliable set up I'd say get some tubeless tyres.

Edit: But no reason not give it a go first. Nothing to lose! might just be a bit frustrating if you only have a track pump!

Never had any trouble setting up ordinary Maxxis tyres (including Minion DHR and DHF) with Stan's.

So, Shop that sells tyres advises you to buy new tyres. What a surprise 😆

UST tyres are overkill for stans, as the rims aren't UST you'll have to use sealant anyway. At the most you want tubeless ready, however your existing Minions will be fine. I've used loads of standard Maxxis tyres tubeless over the years and never had any problems.

Schwalbe's quality control is probably a bigger gamble than whether you can set up a standard Maxxis tubeless.

Right , I'm not familiar with the tyres you're using , but I am running 3 bikes tubeless.

Things I've learned :

Stan's yellow tape is a rip off ,I use Gorilla tape ( 1" from Halfords or on line ) it's about £2 & totally reliable.

Valves , use valves off old inner tubes , just need to be the removable core variety.

Sealant , in the early days , check the level weekly by sloshing the tyres about until you've worked out how long it lasts. Some tyres can 'weep' sealant & leave you empty in a few weeks or so.

Tyre/ Rim combo , it's a matter of luck , some are ace others will leave you screaming in despair !

Further to my above post, now set up. Minimal faff, but good advice on the tape - get wider tape to ensure a proper seal. I think Maxxis tyres are supposed to work, regardless if they are marked as tubeless ready or not.

I have used Specialized 2 bliss, they seemed easy to fit.

Goo stuff easy to fit, only issue I had was leaking around the valves. Will see how it fares after a couple of rides.
