Anyone else had any trouble with tyres blowing off the rim setting up tubeless? I"ve now trashed two rims (Hope hoops with Stans Crest and Ardent tyres). I got the tyre seated fine with a track pump, put the sealant in, no problems until I tried to pump it up and bang! The first one went at about 20psi and the second before I even got to 15psi. This is becoming an expensive problem 👿

Had it happen once with a damaged rim (a flow, didn't damage the rim further but did knock the wheel miles out of true, kinda crazy and once with a damaged tyre on an 819 (didn't do any harm other than to my ears, hands, and mental wellbeing.)

How can you trash a rim?
Twice?

I use Crests and Ardents without any issues.

These rims were unused. And they're definitely bent beyond all repair. Are Stans rims really so weak?

I've been using Crests for about 3.5 years now.
Regular riding and Bikepacking.
I'm over the recommended weight limit and I've never had an issue with any Stans rims.
Bikepacking would put even more weight/stress into the wheel.
Never had a failure in about 6000 K's.
Mine are 29 flavour if that makes any difference.

Nah, they're very strong for their weight. The forces involved are crazily high though, when a tyre blows off, it can break bones. (with cars, it can kill you).

Or, put it another way, I mentioned that damaged Flow Ex- now to badly damage it riding, I had to do a drop into a rock section at fort william on a horrible line, on what I think was a soft tyre- really big hit, but the wheel was still usable. But to hammer it beyond usability, all I needed was an air compressor 😆

No problems here with Crest/Ardents (had 3 rears on 2 different rims so far), and I use a compressor.

Usually takes 35psi to seat one well, then I let the air out to 25psi.

are they std tyres or UST?

I've had std tyres blow from Flows, so I run rimstrips with these now. But I've not had any issues with UST tyres.

FFS! Had an inkling that the problem here might be my track pump seeing as it's the one common factor. Just been and bought a new Lezyne pump, and sure enough a tyre I'd blown up with the old one (a cheap edinburgh bikes pump) reads 50psi on the Lezyne, and <10psi on the crap one. What a f***** idiot I am! 👿

I dread to think what pressures I've been running. I 'd noticed recently that rides felt a little harsh but hadn't twigged! Back to bike maintenance school for me I think 🙂

Do you not squeeze your tyres by hand to check tyre pressure? Or do you get the pressure gauge out every ride? Life'stoo short...

Tubeless for years on Mavics, Stans, Crank Bros (eek!) and Light-Bicycle rims. Never had a rim failure like that.

still odd that that would kill your rim.. i regularly pump new tubeless tyres up to 60psi and leave them for a while to get them good and seated before deflating and adding sealant (stans flows, crests and 355s)

Yeah, jokes aside, alfa that's what I can't understand too. Really feel for the OP as we can all agree bike bits consume the beer tokens 🙁

I've been running 819s for ages and like you have inflate up to high PSI's without a problem - as you say to bed in (if that's really necessary ??) then deflate for the ride.

I'd like to see a slow-mo of the rim as the tyre makes an exit. Surely this has to be a design flaw?? I have no evidence to back that up mind you. Or, could it be designed in so that the rim fails at a lower pressure to safe-guard the user???

I had stans flow blow off the rim after drops both times at high speeds resulting in rim damage both times on rear wheel
Run them with tubes now

I never managed to seat Nobby Nics on my Crests. Tried every trick. Including stretching the tyres to about 60+PSI for a week (measured with a gauge). Now run with tubes.

Had no trouble at all with Continental X-King on DT rims. I put it down to the Crests.

The weight loss is nice but it's not the big benefit of tubeless (and it's more than a few grams, done right)
