I'm thinking about changing my CX bike to a tubeless setup but have concerns about whether it'll work with the kinds of pressure I use.
At the moment, I'm at 85psi on Conti Speed Kings (35mm) but that's largely to stop pinch flats (hence the desire to change to tubeless). If I was going to go tubeless I'd probably be dropping that to 70 or even 65psi.
So, anyone tried similar?
I run mine ghetto at 60psi. No problems there whatsoever
What rims/tape are you guys using? I got open pros to work ghetto once and need to do this again.
I just used a 26" MTB tube. Schwalbe Landcruiser tyre - easiest ghetto conversion ever took 5 minutes all in including trimming the tube. Been airtight for something like 6 weeks now.
I did give it a go a while back but the conti tyre really didn't want to seal - it was a wire one though which I suspect didn't help
I've used Open Pros with an old Eclipse kit & Maxxis Larsons & also Bontrager Select rims with Mich Muds, again with the Eclipse kit.
JRA Jon's advise was not to go too much over 50psi & tbh anything more than that, for me, sort of negates the reason to go tubeless. Don't seem to suffer too much from pinch flats (kiss of death).
clubber 85psi with Speed Kings, thingy the bed!
Are you actually having problems at 50 and lower, or just worried about it? I've done two seasons on Speed Kings with about 30PSI in them.
Tubs?
this is crazy talk, how much you lot weigh, i can run 40 psi and tubes easy at 12.5 stone, 85 is what i use on the road lol
I've certainly pinch flatted at 70psi... Bear in mind that I don't use my CX bike for CX racing - more for riding on trails that aren't really exciting enough for mtbing (well actually, sometimes, just mtb trails) and I find that anything rocky with any speed and less than 85psi = pinches...
Okay, not off road experience but this might help a little. Also worth noting that I weigh 15 stone or more with kit.
My commuter has Alex rims, Stans 26" rim strip stretched to fit, specialized Borough tyres 32 mm and ran at 60 psi both ends with no issue. Ask Al how they're holding up now.
New commuter, Arch rims, 28 mm wire beaded Gatorskins at 80 psi with yellow tape and valves. Not done many miles on these yet though.
Let the air out and use your Jedi powers.
Thanks for that Onzadog - good to hear.
Oldgit - my Jedi powers involve crashing through things on my cross bike but I do seem to manage to do it reasonably fast though clearly not with much finesse...
Just for anyone finding this on google. I find that they held just fine up to 70psi - I didn't go any higher as I didn't fancy a sealant shower...
I run them around 50-60psi now so quite a significant drop from what I was running with tubes. I've actually been as low as 30psi (when they leaked air early on) without any problems other than them feeling a bit squirmy.
I've done a lot of miles on mine now. Need topping up with air once a week but I've had no issue at 80 psi. I'll stick with wire beaded tyres for that though!
Shiman Ultegra wheels + Stan's cyclocross strip + fluid + Schwalbe Landcruisers run at 40 psi for all offroad training (bridleway, woods etc)
Same wheels with Mud 2 at 20 psi for racing
No problems in 2 years.I weigh 12 stone.
jumble thats good to hear thoose wheels works well tubeless with non tubeless tyres.
Clubber what wheels are you using tubeless and with what tyres now?
I'm using halo aerorage rims with a stans cx rim strip and sb8 tyres
jumble thats good to hear thoose wheels works well tubeless with non tubeless tyres.
You must have the Stan's cyclocross strip with the Ultegra wheels with using non tubless tyres. I tried them without and they were fine until the front tyre rolled off the rim 🙂
