I have a few questions about setting up my wheels as tubeless. Now I have Stans Flow rims but bought them 2nd hand and so far have only run them with tubes. What do I need to set them up as tubeless, I'm guessing the right tubeless ready tires, valves and sealant? They already have the rim tape. Also the rear rim has a dent or 2 will this effect the ability to get a good seal?
That's about the size of it - valve in, TLR tyre on, chuck some sealant in and game on. Stans inflate with a track pump IME - sometimes you need to press the tyre on with your hand around the valve area if air is blowing out on inflation.
Hard to say if a rim dent will interfere without knowing the size of it - would need to be fairly substantial to be a problem.
You can use a valve cut out from an old inner tube as your tubeless valve, but I've found the tube lockring isn't good enough to seal it down. Needed to use a more substantial lockring from UST valves that I've had lying around - this works well. Prob best just to buy two dedicated valves in the first instance, and experiment with stuff like this once you're up and running.
You don't necessarily need a tubeless ready tyre, most standard tyres will do the job, so worth trying with what you have.No loss if it doesn't work after all
Do they have the right rim tape? ie plasticky yellow stuff? And is the hole at the valve pretty neat? The valve needs to be able to seal around it so if it's a messy hole it might cause you bother. Fixable easy enough but one to be aware of
Cheers for your advice, I'll gather the bits and bobs and give it a go!
