Sorry if this is a daft question. I have recently converted my mob to tubeless. My rear tyre (on one chunky monkey 2.4 27.5) is losing about 1 psi a day. Have added extra sealant (120ml initially put it) to no avail. Its a ghetto tubeless setup. Is this usual? I reckon its not a massive deal but I am curious

I find all my tubeless tyres lose a bit of pressure in between use. That schwalbe / wtb / Maxxis / on-one tyres that all do the same. Run on wtb / DT Swiss rims with varying makes of tape - including one set of rims with manufacturer applied rim tape.

So I’ve assumed it’s just a thing and not a quirk of any of my setups.

Sometimes takes a bit of extra sealant to stop slow air leaks but I think this is pretty normal for non-UST tubeless setups.

Is 200ml in a rear tyre a bit much for sealant?

Not for a 29/2.35 - about what I use. Probably same for 27.5/2.4 ish?

I also take it c02 best avoided. Does it freeze all sealants? Did it first time on rear tyre

Some tyres are more porous than others so it can take a couple of doses of the sealant before they are air tight.

Just check the air is leaking out the tyre and not the valve or nipples. Rub some soapy water with a brush on the tyres' sidewall and see if bubbles up or see if you can see tiny white beads of the sealant coming through the sidewalls. This is normal and they will eventually get plugged by the sealant. Just give the wheel a little shake every now and then to check there is still some liquid sealant in there and its not all dried up.

Soapy water on the valve or spoke nipples should not be bubbling up. Bubbles at the nipples suggests the tape is not sealing up the spoke holes. bubbles at the valve suggest it has formed a good seal with the valve hole. Also bubbles on the tyre bead / rim interface are not good either shows the tyre is not forming an effective seal. You should only see them on the side wall or tread.

Regarding the CO2, I've not done it my self but many many people on the web saying the CO2 cartridges make the sealant go off and harden much quicker than normal. So there might be some truth in that?

I would think inflating with CO2 to get the beads to bite and stick and the flushing the air a few times with a normal pump should be OK? But I'm no expert.

CO2 makes no difference

People keep telling me Co2 makes no difference. It froze some Planet X Barbieri sealant into solid rubber. Might have been cheap sealant. Changed to some other brand now

I run approx 20 PSI out back and lose a bit between rides - I always check and pump up my tyres a bit every mtb ride (so usually twice a week)

1 PSI a day is probably a bit more than I've experienced but if you're running higher pressure I'd expect you to lose more so maybe it could be that?

I think they drop pressure a wee bit faster than tubes but I always used to air up tyres between rides with those as well so it doesn't bother me particularly.

I did have a mavic non tubeless rim set up ghetto tubeless in the past which did seem to lose pressure quite fast but still use-able so it could just be the tyre rim combo you have? 1 PSI a day doesn't seem like the end of the world anyway

Co2 in my experience is fine. I rotate the wheel to have the valve near the top so the sealant will be pooling below when I use them - not sure if that makes a difference as the whole tyre does seem to go a bit cold! The valve area always seems coldest though.

Yeah I'm 16.5 stone. Run my rear at 34psi.Maybe I could run it lower. My pressure seems high for tubeless.

Hi,

Have you tried changing your sealant? For example, Maxalami MaxSeal it is a little less effected by c02. Its got high glycol content (you can smell it).
