recently upgraded my wheels to a tubeless set up.
on my way back from doing the wakefield wheel on sunday,my back tyre went flat.
i pumped it up enough to get me home with my mini pump, but it took forever.
then when i looked when i got home ,there was a puncture hole about 2mm thick.
i pumped it up with the track pump, and when i got to 30 psi ,air started shooting out again.
i put the hole to the bottom and left it over night, and it looks to have sealed now,i've pumped it up to 35psi and its holding ok.
my question is,is this ok,or do i need to do a repair?(if so what)

and do i need a higher volume pump for tubeless set up when out?

sorry if these questions are obvious.

thanks

Run tubeles and I use co2 cannisters and sometimes carry one of the Lezyne Micro Floor Drive in case we run out of co2 miles from anywhere

patch the inside with a tubeless patch and carry a CO2. That's what I'd do.

You've been unlucky to get such a large hole on your first ride.

I've only just gone tubeless and carry a Topeak Morph which has inflated no problems when I pulled out the Presta valve by accident while out on a ride.

If you know where the hole is I'd fix properly. I however am paranoid of most things and would pick at the back of my mind if I didn't.

Patch the inside, or keep riding on it and carry an anchovy-style tubeless repair kit to use if it keeps leaking (although 2mm sounds on the small side for this kind of repair - the sealant on it's own might work).

CO2 can make the sealant 'go off' I'd be reluctant to use that!

Get a substantial pump, I use one of these:

I carry a choob and a tubeless repair kit CLICKY.

It doesn't look great, but neither does pushing your bike all the way back to the car!

Tyre choice is a little different with tubeless, ultralite racing tyres are not such a great idea due to carcass/sidewalls. Many more tyres are tubeless ready now and often have a little sidewall protection (Bonty TLR, Spesh 2Bliss).

Oh, and make sure you invert the sealant bottle when filling your tyres to get the particles in there.

I assume you have added sealant?

Only 1 puncture I've had which was too big for sealant to deal with but has been successfully fixed by those sticky worms.

edit... just as shown by Herman above

edit 2... I use the tubeless repair kit below

This is the daddy of repair kits. If you get a rip in the tyre that wont seal then you use the rounded file tool to enlarge the hole which initially seems odd. Use the other tool to insert the worm. The glue sets in a couple of minutes and bosh. Very quick, convenient trail repair.

But in your situation. Tyre off, clean thoroughly and fit a normal repair patch. Had to do this 3 times on a Nobby Nic. Worst tyre ever.

Dammit 🙂 beaten to it 🙂

To test if the sealant has patched the hole, deflate your tyres to around 20psi so they are soft and bounce around on the bike. This should work the tyre and the hole should expand and shrink with the bouncing around. If the sealant is not doing a good job the hole burst open again.

I once had a cut in the sidewall. When stationary the sealant would patch the hoe then as soon as I hit a small bump the tyre would deform and the hole would open up again had to put a tube in to finish the ride.

Are the worms a permanent fix, or just to get you home?

Can you get the worms/slugs and glue separately? Don't fancy buying a knife and needle tools when I've got stuff already.

Edit - loads of the repair "string" worms availabale for not a lot of money on ebay. Is the "glue" just vulcanising solution, or is it actual glue?

Worms you can get on ebay for pennies, the glue is just the stuff that comes with repair kits.

CO2 can make the sealant 'go off' I'd be reluctant to use that!

Someone mentioned this to me a few weeks ago - what's the science behind that, then - anyone know...?

Edit : In fact, the person actually advised that the tyre didn't hold its pressure if inflated with CO2 when compared to air, not that the sealant goes off.

Isn't it the low temp the C02 comes out at?

Folks recommend letting the CO2 out then refilling with air, though whether that's fact or mythology I don't know. I suspect it's the same sort of thing as filling your car tyres with nitrogen.

Up the page- are folks using car worms there? The ones that come in the Weldtite (and whatever the other kit I have is) are smaller than my car ones... Does that work OK?
