I have a bike that I want to sell at some point.  It's been well used and this is where I need opinions.  Would you replace the warn (but still functioning) drivetrain before sale or just reduce the price?  Similarly the forks work (hold air, smooth, rebound) but the low speed compression does very little.  Would it be better to split for the frame and wheels only and so not involve the dodgy parts?  I don't want hassle after sale.  What would you do or be happy to buy?

Sell as it is. Just be honest in the advert and price accordingly.

If you disclosed it like that then as long as the price reflected the condition I'd be happy. Most people here have probably got spares they'd swap on anyway .

However, bikes are almost always worth more parted out, so if you want to maximise cash then I'd split it regardless.

As far as i can tell the second hand market is dead currently so selling either way will be difficult…

if you put on a new drivetrain, they buyer may strip it off and replace anyway.

cost/benefit analysis. if you can get a replacement part really cheap, replace it. if not, state its flaws postively

I'd split it. There won't be much demand for a complete bike that needs work. Parts are still selling ok. I've just done it with my old trail bike. Got reasonable money for the frame and wheels, all sold separately. Could easily sell more parts, but most of the rest is going into the spares box. Ended up with enough cash for a new frame (from CRC sale) and quite a few parts for the build.

Interesting! Was thinking of a big old clear out of old to retro to antique kit, so is it the same for parts?

Why not pop a 'trying not to be a stealth ad' stealth ad on here? 😁

Go on ... tell us what it is!

Ha. No, looks like I'll be splitting and selling as parts when I get around to it if that likely to be the least faff.

No, I'd say parts are selling OK. Not particularly high or low. Its complete bikes where the bargains are.

Depends what it is and how much it might go for.

If it's really fancy, a new drivetrain might be justifiable - but I'd tend to agree with flagging that it's worn in the advert.

Not sure bikes always do make more parted out now. Especially if the parts are shagged 😀
